Beyond the exes. Lena Hall spoke exclusively about her character’s new role at a school and what Ali has to manage alongside it—her bipolar disorder. Hall said. “Ali doesn’t [have huge ambitions]. ” and explained that “Her musical ambitions are basically to survive and just to do it because she loves it. That is her ambition.” She also emphasized what draws viewers in. noting Ali is “not necessarily amazing. ” and “she’s not. like. a star. right?” For Hall. the heart of the character is that Ali is “just struggling every day to prove to herself that she can survive without having a breakdown.”.
