Young girl dead, another in critical condition after being struck by car while riding minibikes

A young girl is dead, and another is seriously injured after they were struck by a car while riding minibikes in Brooklyn Center.

The two girls, aged 7 and 9, were riding eastbound on 63rd Avenue North, approaching Brooklyn Drive, when a car heading south on Brooklyn Drive hit them, according to Brooklyn Center Commander Richard Gabler.

Gabler says the two girls were brought to North Memorial, where one was declared dead. Police did not specify which girl died.

As of 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, the other girl was in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene of the crash and is cooperating with police, Gabler added.

“Just feel so bad for the families, and really bad for the driver too,” nebighbor Patty Allyn said. “I don’t think the kids saw the car and I don’t think the car driver saw the kids. It was jsut that quick.”

Another neighbor, Aidon Stockwell, said he had seen the two riding around in morning, hours before the crash.

“This morning I did see them riding around over here. And next thing I see fire trucks, police cars and everything,” Stockwell said. “I noticed the…the little scooter whatever from earlier and like I just realized who got hit.”

Richard Anderson who also lives in the area beleived more traffic control measures such as extra stop signs could improve intersections in the neighborhood.

There was no stop sign at the intersection where the crash occured.

“A lot of the uncontrolled intersections are dangerous,” Anderson told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. “Everytime I drive through them, I slow down on purpose and look both ways.”
