Yankees To Promote George Lombard Jr.

The Yankees are set to select the contract of top prospect George Lombard Jr., according to Jack Curry of YES Network.  New York has an open 40-man roster spot already available, plus the Yankees announced tonight that Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, and Angel Chivilli were all being optioned to Triple-A.  This clears 26-man roster room for both Lombard and Heliot Ramos, who was picked up in a trade with the Giants today.

Lombard was promoted to Triple-A in late April and has hit .268/.405/.440 with six homers and 10 steals over 262 plate appearances for Scranton Wilkes-Barre.  It is quite possible Lombard would’ve already made his MLB debut if it wasn’t for a finger sprain that sidelined him for about a month from mid-June to mid-July, but with the trade deadline come and gone, Lombard is now ready for his first taste of the Show.

Selected 26th overall in the 2023 draft, Lombard has become a fixture on top-100 lists over the last couple of years.  He was in the top half of preseason rankings from The Athletic’s Keith Law (who had Lombard 20th), ESPN.com (24th), MLB Pipeline (32nd) and Baseball America (48th).  In-season updates have seen Lombard jump to 13th on BA’s list and 20th on Pipeline’s list.

More to come…
