Yankees’ Ryan McMahon makes concerning injury admission after Orioles game

Ryan McMahon provided a positive update on his injured left thumb after the Yankees’ win over the Orioles, but his status remains uncertain.

Ryan McMahon provided an encouraging but cautious update after leaving the New York Yankees’ 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles with a left thumb injury. New York’s third baseman jammed his thumb while sliding into second base during the second inning at Camden Yards. He initially remained in the game, but the injury became more noticeable as the night progressed.

Swelling eventually forced the Yankees to remove him in the eighth inning, with Jose Caballero taking his place as a pinch-hitter.

Following the game, McMahon said his thumb was still “a little sore,” but he was encouraged by the initial results of the postgame testing.

“The initial results are pretty positive,” McMahon said after the game.

The Yankees infielder also expressed hope that he could return to the lineup Thursday against Baltimore, although he acknowledged that his availability would depend on how his thumb feels when he wakes up.

“I’m hoping to play tomorrow,” he said.

Manager Aaron Boone said McMahon would undergo further evaluation of the thumb. Initial X-rays did not show structural damage, but the Yankees planned additional testing Thursday to determine the extent of the injury.

The injury occurred after McMahon singled home the Yankees’ second run and attempted to stretch the hit into a double. He was thrown out at second, with his left thumb getting caught during the slide. Although he continued playing, the swelling increased enough for Boone to pull him from the game.

The 31-year-old’s potential absence would be another concern for a Yankees club already dealing with significant injuries. New York is currently without Aaron Judge, who remains sidelined with a fractured rib, while starting pitcher Max Fried was recently placed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation.

For now, the initial testing provides some relief for the Yankees. However, McMahon’s status for Thursday remains uncertain, with his morning evaluation expected to determine whether he can take the field.

New York has already secured the series against Baltimore after Wednesday’s comeback victory and will look to complete the sweep on Thursday in Baltimore.
