Jason Dominguez didn’t shy away from the moment that sidelined him.
The New York Yankees outfielder has been on the injured list since May 7 after crashing into the wall, and he’s now watched the footage that captured how the shoulder injury happened. He was still struck by it even after the play had already been explained to him away from the camera.
“It was scary to see how I hit the wall, but I definitely watched it,” Dominguez said. “It was a great catch.”
There’s a strange kind of trust in that contrast. The catch itself still earns his admiration, but seeing the collision again brings him back to the one part you can’t control: the impact.
Dominguez has been able to work out by hitting off of a batting tee, but the Yankees aren’t sure when he will begin a rehab assignment—or even when he might return to the majors. For now, New York’s focus is straightforward: pay close attention to his shoulder throughout the recovery process.
When healthy, Dominguez hasn’t found the same rhythm he once projected for 2026. Over nine games, he’s hit .200 with a home run and four RBIs. The Yankees are still waiting for him to fully break out at the MLB level.
That patience has extra weight because Dominguez once carried a different kind of expectation. He was considered one of the best prospects in baseball, penciled in as a future building block for the Yankees. And in 2025, he flashed what that future could look like, hitting .257 with 10 home runs, 47 RBIs and 23 stolen bases over 123 games.
Now, the first priority is simpler than any long-term label. The Yankees just need Dominguez back on the diamond. Once he progresses to full baseball activities, New York will figure out its next plan of attack.
