Aaron Judge recognized how special the moment the Yankees and Mets shared was as they remembered those who were lost during 9/11.
Today marked the 25th anniversary of 9/11, a tragic event that brought together the entire nation. On this day of remembering one of the most devastating attacks in world history, the New York Yankees and New York Mets met for the first of a three-game set over the weekend — bringing together the community that bore the brunt of this tragedy at Yankee Stadium, one of the most iconic sporting landmarks in American history.
Prior to the start of the game, a special 9/11 rendition of God Bless America was performed to remember those who were lost during this tragedy and to fortify the resolve of those who have experienced tremendous heartbreak from this devastating event. And Yankees superstar Aaron Judge felt how special this moment was, especially when they shared it with their fellow New Yorkers, the Mets.
“Yeah, you kinda forget about baseball. It’s more than baseball. It’s about uniting as a country, uniting as a city. I thought it was pretty special, that (version of) God Bless America. You saw all of us went out there on a line, the Mets all hopped the fence, they went out there on a line. We didn’t tell any of the guys over there [that we were gonna do that]. It was special to see us both out there, united,” Judge said, via SNY Yankees on X.

Indeed, baseball (and sports, in general) takes a backseat when it comes to matters like this. 9/11 was an event that shook the entire nation, and it’s important to remember the lives that were taken away due to senseless violence.
But baseball is also called America’s pastime for a reason, and this is a sport that has always united communities across the states. And for at least one night, the Yankees and Mets, despite being fierce rivals on the diamond, were united for the same cause.
The Yankees defeated the Mets, 6-4, on Friday to move one step closer to clinching a postseason spot.
