Yam Madar deal with LSU shifts NCAA future

Israeli point guard Yam Madar is reportedly set to join LSU’s men’s basketball program, a move that would require NCAA special approval after his age-based eligibility hurdle.

Yam Madar’s path toward U.S. college basketball has apparently moved from rumor to agreement, with LSU viewed as the next stop for the Israeli point guard.

The latest claim is that Madar has agreed to join LSU Tigers men’s basketball. a step away from European competition and his current team. Hapoel Tel Aviv B.C… He is described as potentially the last European talent to make the leap to the NCAA. and the timing matters: Madar will turn 26 next December and is said to have already turned 25.

That age puts eligibility into focus. Having turned 25, Madar will require special approval from the NCAA in order to become eligible to play college basketball in the United States.

In recent days, negotiations with the NCAA program from Louisiana had been floated, with speculation linking the deal to a $5 million per season package. Those talks now appear to have reached full agreement.

LSU’s interest in European talent has also been part of the story.. Last season. the program featured Spanish prospect Pablo Tamba as well as Madar’s fellow Israeli Ron Ziper. who is expected to transfer to another university.. Virtus Bologna’s Saliou Niang is also expected to join the program. as LSU reportedly plans a stronger push into the European talent market.

Madar’s potential move is tied to frustration over his role at Hapoel Tel Aviv. particularly during the EuroLeague quarterfinal series against Real Madrid Baloncesto.. Across the series. he played a total of just 10 minutes: fewer than five in Game 2 and slightly more than six in Game 4.. That limited court time has fueled the sense that a change elsewhere was becoming increasingly likely.

In the EuroLeague this season, Madar finished with 16 appearances, averaging 3.1 points, 1.4 assists, and 1.1 rebounds per game, figures that sit alongside the quarterfinal minutes and the reported LSU agreement.

If LSU’s reported deal holds, Madar’s next challenge won’t be settling into a new league so much as clearing the NCAA eligibility hurdle that comes with being 25 and turning 26 next December.

  1. I saw this and thought it was already official, like they signed him and everything. But then it’s “special approval” and $5 million?? That’s not college basketball anymore lol.

  2. NCAA eligibility has me confused because if he already played in EuroLeague then he’s basically pro, right? Like why would age even matter, isn’t it about skill not numbers? Also Real Madrid mention—did he lose or something.

  3. If this is true, LSU is just buying talent from Europe and acting like it’s some fresh “development” thing. $5 million per season package sounds insane, even if it’s “reportedly.” Meanwhile he only played 10 minutes vs Real Madrid so yeah, I get why he’d want out of that role. But the NCAA approval part feels like a loophole waiting to happen.
