Last month, the experience started the way dread often does: quietly, then all at once. Xiu Xiu’s live show reimagined David Lynch’s Eraserhead, preceded by a screening of the film. The sequence felt like it couldn’t be watched so much as endured—proof that some artworks don’t just sit beside each other. They bleed into the same bloodstream.

Now that performance is getting its own studio afterlife. Xiu Xiu has announced Eraserhead Xiu Xiu, out July 10 via Polyvinyl. Along with the release news, the band shared their chilling rendition of the movie’s “In Heaven,” originally written by Peter Ivers, with lyrics by Lynch.

The set returns in a different form this fall: Xiu Xiu has a string of dates lined up where they’ll play their Eraserhead set. For anyone trying to prepare. there’s also 2016’s Plays the Music of Twin Peaks—an earlier waypoint for anyone who knows what Xiu Xiu does when it treats screen-music as something physical.

Eraserhead Xiu Xiu carries a particular promise. too: that even if the studio record captures the performance faithfully. the visual component of the live show couldn’t be replaced by audio alone. In other words, the band has made music before that sounds like a nightmare. But this time, they’re trying to bottle the sensation that came with watching it happen.

The album arrives with cover artwork and a seven-track sequence:
1. Viento
2. Sleep Synth
3. Tetra
4. Steampipe
5. Smashy Smashy
6. Ether
7. In Heaven

If you want a way back in before the July 10 release, revisit the band’s 2024 interview with Xiu Xiu—then brace yourself for the real question their work has always asked: what happens when the boundary between film, song, and atmosphere stops holding.

  1. The headline made it sound like they’re releasing a whole movie or something on July 10. Then I guess it’s just music? Either way, Lynch + Xiu Xiu sounds like a bad idea to listen to before bed.

  2. Wait didn’t Xiu Xiu do that Twin Peaks thing already? I swear I saw a clip where they were just playing over the TV with random noise and everyone acted like it’s genius. Idk I’m confused but I’ll probably still check it out.

  3. “In Heaven” is chilling?? Like the actual song from the movie, or did they just rename something. Also Polyvinyl… that label always puts out weird stuff, so this checks out. Seven tracks too, I saw the list and half the names don’t sound real lol.
