X-Men '97 – With X-Men ’97 Season 2 set to arrive on Disney+ on July 1, Marvel’s animated comeback is already earning major critical buzz: the series sits at a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes after a weekend review embargo lift. Reviewers praised the animation and the ret

When the second season of X-Men ’97 finally lands on Disney+ on July 1, it won’t be walking in cold. Marvel lifted the review embargo over the weekend—two full weeks before the premiere—telegraphing confidence in a show that already became the highest-rated Marvel project in history.

At the time of writing, after 12 reviews, X-Men ’97 Season 2 holds a flawless 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Reviewers’ praise comes through fast, and it isn’t just about nostalgia. Collider’s Aidan Kelly scored the season an 8/10. pointing to “beautiful animation” and focusing on “depiction of Apocalypse. ” the new feature villain of the show. Nicholas Brooks reviewed Season 2 for CBR and gave it a 9/10 as well. calling out “higher stakes. ” while also warning that it could be “too violent for young children.” Simon Gallagher of ComicBook.com echoed the positive momentum. saying the new season “mostly continues the good work of the first season.”.

That reaction—nearly perfect critic scores alongside specific concerns about violence—lands right as Marvel fans are already bracing for a packed slate of live-action releases. Wonder Man debuted on Disney+ as a binge release. and despite its long development time. it arrived to widespread acclaim from critics and audiences. The response was strong enough to earn the show a rare Season 2 renewal.

Marvel has kept its TV momentum going with the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. which led directly into the Jon Bernthal-led Punisher special. One Last Kill. Bernthal is also set to star as Frank Castle later this summer in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. which is described as the final Marvel film before Avengers: Doomsday.

Even with all that. X-Men ’97 is still the headline for animated fans—timed just as the studio’s broader Marvel calendar ramps up. Marvel says it will follow Vision Quest in October, with the show set for release on October 14. Paul Bettany returns as Vision after last appearing in the first-ever Marvel Disney+ show. WandaVision. and the cast also includes MCU veterans James Spader as Ultron and Faran Tahir as Raza. While Vision Quest plot specifics are being kept under wraps. it’s confirmed the series will follow Vision as he works to piece his memory back together.

The critical warmth around X-Men ’97 Season 2 is the kind of early momentum Marvel rarely gets twice. With July 1 now clearly circled, the only question left for fans is whether the perfect score survives the full wave—especially for those wondering how intense Apocalypse’s return will get.

  1. Wait so it’s 100% on Rotten Tomatoes but they also said it might be too violent for young kids? Like make up your mind lol. I’m still gonna let my nephew watch it if it’s like the old cartoons.

  2. Apocalypse is in it right? I feel like they’re rushing villains or something. Also I heard Wonder Man was good so now I’m expecting this to be like live action vibes even though it’s animated. Kinda weird they’re talking about violence like that’s new for X-Men…

  3. I don’t trust 100% scores anymore, critics are paid in perks or whatever. But if they say it’s “beautiful animation” then fine. Also why does it feel like every Marvel thing is connected now with Daredevil and Punisher and all that, like I need a spreadsheet. July 1 can’t come fast enough I guess.
