Wooden Piano Keys Hide a Hook-And-Press Lock

A homebrew key holder built from CNC-cut hardwood turns car keys into something you can “play” for retrieval. It uses a maple actuator hidden under the wooden piano keys to lower brass hooks, and a second press traps the metal key safely on the mount.
The moment you press one of the “white” keys, the key holder stops looking like décor and starts behaving like a mechanism.
Inventive Robin has built a key holder that borrows the shape of a one-octave piano—except the keys are real hardwood pieces designed to hold car keys. The body is CNC’d out of hardwood, and it’s not just a prop with hooks glued on top. Under the wooden keys sits a concealed system made to move when you press.
The “white” keys are made of maple. When you press the maple key—acting as the wooden actuator—it lowers brass hooks so you can retrieve your metal key. Press it again, and the brass hook lifts back up, trapping the likely metal key hanging on it. In other words: one press to present the key, a second press to secure it.
The hidden mechanism was carved from acetyl sheet on the same Shapoko CNC machine that handled the wood. and it was assembled using purchased metal rods. springs. and some plastic standoffs. The design is deliberately open enough to be watched in action. and Robin suggests checking out the build video—jumping to 4:46 if you don’t want the full design brief.
It’s a small hack, not a sprawling invention, but it’s clearly polished. Robin is “happy with the result,” and the key holder looks nice enough that visitors might want to photograph it. There’s just one practical warning: those photos could potentially become a security risk. and the suggestion is to have people take them without keys in place.
For anyone who’s tired of the same old bowl by the door or the same old guesswork by the laundry room, the appeal is immediate—this one turns finding your keys into a quick press-and-release ritual.

So you’re basically pressing piano keys to get a car key back… kinda cool but also seems like overkill. What happens if it jams?
I saw something like this on TikTok and everyone acted like it was genius, but it’s just a fancy trap for your keys right? Like the “brass hooks” are gonna grab the wrong thing if you’re not careful.
Wait they said it’s a “security risk” because of photos?? That’s reaching. If someone wants to steal keys, they don’t need to see your little piano-door decor. Also why would visitors be taking pics with keys in place in the first place
This is adorable but also I don’t get why it’s called a piano like… it’s just wood keys. Wouldn’t it be way easier to just have a bowl? And the maple actuator thing sounds like it could break real fast if you’re pressing it a million times a week.
