Wolverines’ Clockgate controversy sends Nick Wright on scathing sports replay rant
Nick Wright argues replay reviews harm sports, using Michigan’s controversial Hail Mary win as a prime example of the problem.
On Monday’s edition of First Things First, Nick Wright continued his tirade against replay in sports. He argues that replay ruins authentic moments during the game and that the search for perfection creates doubt about game outcomes, as in the Michigan-Western Michigan game. With only one second remaining on the clock, Bryce Underwood executed a Hail Mary pass that was ultimately caught by JJ Buchanan, securing the victory and inaugurating the Kyle Whittingham era with an awe-inspiring victory.

Wright laid out his premise during the first segment of the show.
“Replay in all of its forms is bad in sports. There is no consistency. It opens up far too much speculation about what Brew was talking about, corruption. Just speculation about it. It’s bad for the fans, it’s bad for the viewers, and the cherry on top of this awful cake is it doesn’t actually make the product more accurate or fair. All of the players on the field were operating in a world where that game had ended. All, everyone and all the coaches…Bryce Underwood took that time seeing that clock. So everybody’s operating like, ‘We lost.’ And they’re like,’”Well, actually, let’s see.’
He added, “IT doesn’t make the product better. It adds to more speculation about corruption, about gambling, about terrible internet conspiracy theories. It removes the ability as a fan to purely and fully celebrate amazing moments because there’s always a, ‘But wait, what if’…It doesn’t make things better, and I don’t understand why we’ve gone to such lengths to try to get it right when so often we see we are not getting it right.
