Without Dad LeBron and without a girlfriend: Bronny James heads into a new NBA season on his own, in more ways than one

Bronny James is heading toward the 2026-27 NBA season with more independence than he has experienced at any previous stage of his young professional career.

The 21-year-old Los Angeles Lakers guard will begin the campaign without his father, LeBron James, as a teammate for the first time since entering the NBA.

Bronny James reacts to the NBA rumor that has fans excited about his father’s future

At the same time, speculation surrounding his relationship with longtime girlfriend Parker Whitfield has added another personal storyline to what is already a major period of transition.

LeBron officially left Los Angeles during the offseason after eight seasons with the Lakers, signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026-27 campaign.

The move ended the brief but historic period in which father and son shared an NBA roster. LeBron described Philadelphia as his “last decision” after considering retirement. For Bronny, meanwhile, the Lakers remain home.

The younger James was selected 55th overall in the 2024 NBA Draft and is now entering his third professional season. The Lakers’ current roster lists him alongside Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves and a significantly reshaped supporting cast.

But his personal life has also become the subject of speculation after fans noticed that he and Whitfield appeared to unfollow one another on Instagram in August.

Neither James nor Whitfield has publicly confirmed that they have ended their relationship, meaning reports of a breakup remain unconfirmed.

Still, the apparent social-media separation has generated considerable attention because the pair had been linked for years after meeting at Sierra Canyon High School.

Whitfield’s parents have now unintentionally added fuel to that speculation.

Dondre Whitfield celebrated his daughter’s 22nd birthday with an emotional message, writing, “This young lady has changed my life for 22 years!!!

Parker, God sent you to me as a signal that I needed to become a better man and a more evolved human being. He used you make sure that I would be equipped to do my purpose work in life. It has been an honor being your father. Every single day!!!! I couldn’t love you more. Happy birthday pumpkin!!!! The forever man in your life, Daddy.”

Some fans interpreted the phrase “The forever man in your life” as a possible reference to Bronny, although there is no evidence that Dondre intended it as a criticism of the Lakers guard.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield also shared an affectionate tribute to her daughter, writing: “HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BABY GIRL!!!!!! You are such an inspiring woman. In a world where most people don’t have much depth, you dream of working with Children, helping your community and always being a honest and true friend. Don’t ever worry about the people who are incapable of seeing what a shining star you are because your world is gonna be filled with so much love and light, all the negative things will fall to the curb. I love you more than you know my Parky poo. @parker.whitfield”

Again, there is no confirmation that the message was directed toward James. The interpretation largely comes from fans connecting the timing and wording with the couple’s apparent social-media disconnect.

Bronny now has to establish himself without LeBron

Whatever happens away from the court, the basketball challenge facing Bronny is becoming increasingly important.

His first two NBA seasons were inevitably viewed through the lens of his famous father. Playing alongside LeBron created an unprecedented storyline, but it also meant almost every appearance carried additional scrutiny.

That dynamic disappears in 2026/27. The Lakers have undergone a substantial roster transformation around Doncic, who is now firmly positioned as the franchise’s centerpiece. Austin Reaves is another major piece, while the team has added players including Collin Sexton, Quentin Grimes, Walker Kessler, Kevon Looney, Jaden Hardy and Ziaire Williams.

That could make Bronny’s role harder to predict.

He is competing for opportunities within a backcourt that contains several players capable of handling the ball or contributing offensively.

At the same time, the Lakers have reason to continue developing the young guard rather than expecting him to immediately become a major offensive option. Bronny’s own comments suggest he understands that versatility will be crucial.

“I mean, all across the board I am trying to get better,” James stated, acknowledging his growing comfort level in the gym.

“I’m playing with Luka and AR still, so I’m gonna be off-ball. When it’s needed, I need to be able to knock down shots and create for others, and I think I have been doing a great job of that this summer.”

That role makes sense alongside Doncic and Reaves, two players who can dominate possessions and create opportunities for teammates. Rather than needing to become the Lakers’ primary creator, Bronny can potentially carve out minutes through defense, movement, shooting and secondary playmaking.

His development will therefore be one of the quieter but intriguing stories surrounding the Lakers this season.

The team finished 53-29 in 2025-26 before being swept by Oklahoma City in the Western Conference semifinals, but the offseason roster turnover means last year’s success provides only limited clues about what comes next.

For Bronny, the circumstances are even more different.

There is no longer the daily presence of LeBron in the Lakers locker room. And if the speculation surrounding Whitfield does eventually prove accurate, there may also be a significant change in his life away from basketball.

Still, James has avoided making his personal situation part of his public basketball narrative. His recent focus has centered on improving his game and understanding how he can contribute alongside Doncic and Reaves.

That may ultimately be the defining theme of his third NBA season.

Bronny James arrived in Los Angeles carrying the weight of one of basketball’s most famous surnames. Now, with LeBron in Philadelphia and his personal life under a microscope, he has an opportunity to build an identity that belongs increasingly to him.

Whether he can turn that independence into a meaningful role for the Lakers will be one of the questions to watch when the 2026-27 season gets underway.
