SAN FRANCISCO — The Chase Center crowd didn’t just notice Kate Martin’s return to Golden State. They celebrated it from the start, with a video tribute and a rousing ovation for the Sparks guard after she played the inaugural 2025 season for the Valkyries and began this year with the team.

But by the time the night settled into a rout, the tribute belonged to a moment that couldn’t change the scoreline. Gabby Williams scored 16 points as the Golden State Valkyries beat the Los Angeles Sparks 78-58 on Monday night, sealing their third straight win.

Kaila Charles came off the bench to deliver 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Golden State. Charles also helped swing momentum before halftime, scoring the final seven points of the first half. She went 5 of 7 from the floor overall, including two 3-pointers, and the Valkyries built a 45-26 lead at the break.

Veronica Burton added 12 points and Cecilia Zandalasini scored 10 for the Valkyries, who knocked down eight of their first 13 shots to grab an early 25-10 advantage after one quarter. They kept pushing after that, scoring 36 points in the paint throughout the game and finishing with 30 bench points.

Los Angeles fought for answers but couldn’t find rhythm. Rae Burrell scored 13 points for the Sparks, while Kelsey Plum and Nneka Ogwumike were held to nine points apiece. Plum and Ogwumike combined for an off-night on offense. with Ogwumike missing her first three shots as the Sparks started 3 of 13 from the field and 1 for 6 from deep. The Sparks finished at 33.3% on field goals, and their three-game winning streak ended with the loss.

Martin’s homecoming included numbers that looked more like a return than a rhythm. She finished with three points, three rebounds and a pair of assists in 11 minutes.

With the result locked in, the Valkyries turn quickly to their next stop: they host Dallas on Wednesday night. The Sparks, whose shooting struggled to match the early tempo, head next to Minnesota on Wednesday night.
