Will Trent Fans Want Scott Foley To Return After His Other Show’s Cancellation, And They Have Ideas
Will Trent may not be returning on the 2026 TV schedule, but it will be back in 2027. The ABC procedural has been renewed for Season 5, and the new episodes can’t get here soon enough. Season 4 ended on a pretty heartbreaking note, with Scott Foley’s Dr. Seth McDale dying in a car crash. While it seemed to mark the end of Seth, fans are hoping that they haven’t seen the last of him now that Foley’s other show has been canceled.
Foley was working on not one but two shows this year. On top of Will Trent, he starred in the drama series It’s Not Like That for Wonder Project at Prime Video. The eight-episode first season ran from January to March, with the series being made available for everyone with a Prime Video subscription this past May.
Unfortunately, earlier this month, Prime officially canceled It’s Not Like That despite the series cracking the Top 10. Now that Foley’s schedule is seemingly a little more open, fans on Reddit are hoping that he’ll makes a return to WT, even though Seth’s canonically dead. A lot of users have their own ideas as to how the show could address that development, and they’re not too bad:

I have seen a handful of shows and movies in which dead characters come back, sometimes more than once and occasionally as someone completely different. Honestly, it’s not impossible for Will Trent revive Seth, as his demise could be retconned to have been faked. Yet hallucinations are probably the most realistic way to bring him back, especially since some fans already believe Will’s therapist isn’t real. As Angie continues to grieve and raise their daughter, perhaps she’ll be seeing visions of her late partner as part of the grieving process.
While I haven’t seen Dallas, I have heard all about the season that was just a dream sequence. It would be pretty cool to see Will Trent pull something like that off, but then the writers would have to think about something important. They’d have to consider how much story they’d want to tell before revealing that it was all a dream and that Seth is actually still alive or in a coma, etc. That is another possibility that might just work, as StormCloudRaineeDay suggested:
They could totally start the next season with Angie waking up from a nightmare of everything that happened in that last episode and Seth comforting her and reassuring her that all three of them survived the crash with no permanent damage, and have since fully recovered.
From a storytelling perspective, that pitch would make sense. Given the way Season 4 ended, a few months have passed since Seth’s death, but it would be easy to bring him back in the picture at this point since not much has happened since then.
It’s clear that fans want Scott Foley back as Dr. Seth McDale, but the question is: how might that happen? Of course, that’s all assuming Foley is even open to returning at all and that the producers ask him back. As a fan, I’ll say that it would be. a real treat to see Seth back from the dead, though I won’t get my hopes up to much right now. Fans will just have to wait and see what happens when Will Trent Season 5 premieres in 2027 on ABC. Right now, all episodes are streaming now with a Hulu subscription, so catch up on the show!
