Wild Bird brings McQueen and Blow road trip

A new short film, Wild Bird, follows the relationship between Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow on a road trip—cast with Russell Tovey and Olivia Colman, directed by Andrew Haigh, and produced by Susie Hall through a HATO Pictures and WePresent collaboration

The story behind fashion’s biggest myth—the one about genius arriving fully formed—isn’t a museum wall. It’s a room you can’t breathe in.

In Wild Bird, a new short film built around Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow, the pressure isn’t abstract. It’s personal. The film’s premise returns to the kind of moment that never makes it into glossy retrospectives: a door that only opens when someone powerful decides you’re worth noticing before the market catches up.

For McQueen, that deciding voice belonged to Isabella Blow. For Blow, the influential gatekeepers shifted across her life—Anna Wintour first, before it became André Leon Talley. The film is coming “literally” as a follow-up to that relationship. set to dramatize how an eye for talent can change not only a career. but a person’s ability to keep trying once the fear sets in.

The background is already there, vivid and oddly specific. Blow. after famously cleaning her desk with a bottle of Perrier. would leave her work. put on black organza horns. and head to Central Saint Martins. She had a weakness for headpieces—the woman is buried with a Philip Tracey hat—and in the film’s orbit. that taste reads less like style trivia and more like a survival method.

At Central Saint Martins, Blow watched the 1992 MA Graduate Show, including McQueen’s collection. She would later buy the collection entirely for £5000. and she would pay the designer £100 a week—supporting him not just financially. but by keeping him inside the system she felt he had just cracked open.

Those details are part of fashion lore. Now Wild Bird aims to put their electricity back in motion.

The short film will star Russell Tovey as Alexander McQueen and Olivia Colman as Isabella Blow. The story follows them on a road trip. with the cast arranged to mirror the intensity at the center of the relationship: McQueen rendered as the kind of artist Blow saw clearly; Blow rendered as the decisive force who could recognize brilliance before it was marketable.

Wild Bird is set to be directed by filmmaker Andrew Haigh. Susie Hall will produce it as part of a HATO Pictures and WePresent collaboration. Sandy Powell is responsible for costume design. bringing the film’s visual language back to the one thing the story cannot escape: fashion as both armor and risk.

For all the names attached to it—Haigh behind the camera. Hall producing. Powell designing costumes—the most striking thing about Wild Bird isn’t the creative lineup. It’s the focus on a relationship that began with a gamble: one influential person stepping in decisively when everyone else might have looked away. In a world that often turns talent into a product only after the fact. the film’s attention to that earlier. shakier room feels like more than nostalgia. It feels like a reminder that careers don’t always start with confidence.

They start with someone choosing to see you.

  1. I don’t get why it’s called a road trip if it’s like… fashion history? Also “genius arriving fully formed” sounds like marketing talk.

  2. Wait Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow are like the same era? I swear I saw something about Anna Wintour too so now it’s all connected?? Idk I’m just mad because I thought this was gonna be about birds.

  3. The Perrier bottle cleaning her desk part is kinda iconic I guess. But $5000 for the whole collection?? That feels fake, like who has that kind of money to just buy out someone’s work. I’m sure it was more complicated than the article makes it sound.
