Why Michael Irvin likes Carson Beck even more with Cardinals than at Miami

Michael Irvin is a big fan of Carson Beck and the way he is performing with the Arizona Cardinals, even more so than his time at Miami.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin knows a thing or two about elite quarterback play, and he is fully buying into Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck. On a recent episode of The White House, the former Miami Hurricanes legend shared why he believes Beck will actually be a better signal-caller in the pros than he was in college.

“I like Carson Beck as a pro,” Irvin said. “I loved him for us at University of Miami. I like him better as a pro than a college player.”

For Irvin, it all comes down to processing power and football IQ. The Playmaker believes Beck’s ability to diagnose defenses before the snap gives him a distinct advantage over quarterbacks who rely solely on reactive, post-snap play.

“That first preseason game, he looked great,” Irvin noted. “And I said to people, I knew he would be a better pro than he even was in college. Coz the quarterbacks that can play the game shoulders up, pre-snap quarterbacks as opposed to post-snap quarterbacks. Carson Beck has that pre-snap ability; he sees the game.”

That pre-snap intelligence showed out immediately during the NFL Hall of Fame Game against the Carolina Panthers. Drafted in the second round with the 52nd overall pick by Arizona, Beck commanded the offense with veterans’ poise. He dissected Carolina’s defense by completing 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards, zero interceptions, and a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Simi Fehoko. He also uncorked a 49-yard strike to wide receiver Jalen Brooks, earning a stellar 125.4 passer rating in his exhibition debut.

While Arizona currently has veteran Jacoby Brissett on the roster, Beck’s mental sharpness and impressive preseason start give fans plenty of reason for optimism. If Irvin’s instincts are right, the rookie’s sharp mind will translate to big-time success in the NFL.
