New York Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr.’s current slump could derail the team’s chances at an AL East title.
Coming off a 5-3 win over the Colorado Rockies in their series opener, the New York Yankees are trying to gain ground. Currently four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, the Yankees know winning the division would make their potential run through October smoother. Tuesday night’s win was their 82nd, clinching the franchise’s 34th consecutive over .500 season.
The continued slide of former Gold Glove shortstop Anthony Volpe had forced Yankees GM Brian Cashman’s hand earlier this summer. A few weeks ago, Cashman sent Volpe down to Triple-A, replacing him with top prospect George Lombard Jr. The move has been a success so far, as Lombard Jr.’s excellent defense by itself has been a huge upgrade over Volpe. There’s even been talk of a potential Gold Glove for Lombard Jr., although that does seem unlikely.
The rising rookie’s offense, however, has been erratic. He’s only played four games in September, hitting just .154 with no home runs and one RBI. In 92 at-bats, Lombrd Jr. is hitting .239 with two home runs and 7 RBI, to go with a stolen base. His steady play at the bottom of the lineup is reminiscent of Volpe’s solid 2024 campaign, when the Yankees won the AL pennant and lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.
However, Lombard Jr.’s play as of late has been down. If this slump continues, it could hurt the Yankees’ chances of running down the Rays. The AL East winner will likely be the number one seed of the American League. They’ll receive a bye, while second place will likely battle the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card round. Last year, New York battled Boston in a three-game set in the Bronx, dispatching the Red Sox in three games. Current Yankees ace Cam Schlittler, a Cy Young frontrunner, had his first signature playoff moment, striking out a then-career-high 12 batters in eight shutout innings of a series-clinching Game 3 win.
It’s up to Lombard Jr. to see if he can rise to the occasion, much like Schlittler did last October. That playoff run has helped propel him to superstardom in 2026, as the young righty is the leading contender for AL Cy Young. If Lombard Jr. can get back to his previous form, the one that led him to become the top Yankee prospect, then New York’s shot at a 28th World Series trophy would become even better.
