White Sox send C Joey Bart, LHP Chris Murphy to injured list; recall C Edgar Quero, RHP David Sandlin

It was a heck of an upgrade while it lasted.

Sure, let’s go with that.

So long for now, Joey Bart. The White Sox put the veteran catcher on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left hand after he was hit by a pitch Thursday in Boston in his third game since being acquired at the trade deadline. He’ll miss more than a month, general manager Chris Getz said.

‘‘We’re going to miss Joey,’’ Getz said. ‘‘Tough break for him, no pun intended.’’

With Kyle Teel likely out until sometime in September, the Sox are back in the Drew Romo-and-Edgar Quero business for at least the next few weeks. That’s a dangerous business to be in, given Romo’s .129 batting average and Quero’s .194 — each player has an OPS below .500 — amid the high stakes of a division race.

Quero, sent down at the deadline to make way for Bart, was recalled in time to start the opener Friday of a critical weekend series against the Guardians at Rate Field.

‘‘We hope that he can step up,’’ Getz said.

It has been quite the disappointing sophomore season for Quero, still just 23.

‘‘Everybody knows it’s been a really tough year for me,’’ he said. ‘‘But last time I went up [in July, after Teel sprained his ankle], I was feeling pretty good. I’m feeling pretty good right now, too, and I’m ready to go.’’

Confidence in Castillo

It has been a rough season for starting pitcher Luis Castillo, the biggest piece the Sox added to their puzzle at the deadline, and Castillo’s first start for them Thursday in Boston was no picnic. He was knocked around for five runs in four innings by the ridiculously hot Red Sox.

But Castillo was calm and confident on his first day in the home clubhouse Friday.

‘‘My best skill right now is I can still throw the ball and I can throw the ball hard,’’ he told the Sun-Times via a translator. ‘‘And I can control where I throw the ball. I’m very confident when I can do that.’’

Getz said he ‘‘loved the vibe’’ watching Castillo pitch.

‘‘The stuff is there,’’ Getz said. ‘‘He’s got the ability to execute, and we know we’re going to [get] a positive version of Luis Castillo.’’

You do you, Sam

Whatever happened between Sox rookie Sam Antonacci and Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras in Boston — OK, fine, Antonacci gave a little elbow to Contreras while running down the line, no doubt about it — manager Will Venable doesn’t want to see him stop playing with an edge.

‘‘That’s Sam,’’ Venable said. ‘‘You’re not going to be able to take that away from him.’’

Roch star

A day after No. 1 overall draft pick Roch Cholowsky belted his first home run as a pro, Getz was asked whether fans on the South Side might see him in the big leagues next season.

‘‘I would be hesitant to state that he’s going to help us that quickly,’’ Getz said.

Well, that’s no fun.

Sweet 13

Former player and manager Ozzie Guillen’s No. 13 will be retired by the Sox before the game Saturday. He’ll the first manager and 13th player to be so honored by the team.

The Sox put left-handed reliever Chris Murphy on the 15-day injured list with a strained flexor and recalled right-hander David Sandlin, who jumped right into the fray out of the bullpen in the first inning. He pitched scoreless ball until he yielded five runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
