Is there a tropical storm near Florida right now?
Although there are no named storms on track to directly hit Florida as of Monday, Aug. 31, a tropical depression being monitored by forecasters is expected to impact portions of the Gulf Coast.
The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Depression Five.
It’s the third name change for the system in the northern Gulf as of Aug. 31, which started the day as Invest 97L before becoming Potential Tropical Cyclone Five at 11 a.m. and then Tropical Depression Five at 2 p.m ET.
Residents along the northern Gulf Coast were told early Aug. 31 to prepare for heavy rain as the system approaches land.
Tropical storm warnings have been issued for portions of the Upper Texas and southwestern Louisiana coasts. The system is forecast to become a tropical storm by tonight, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The official peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season is on Thursday, Sept. 10. Hurricane season begins in June and stretches through the fall, peaking from mid-August through mid-October and ending in November.
