What happened to Shane McClanahan? Injury updates for Rays vs. Rangers on 7/30/26

Tampa Bay Rays starter Shane McClanahan left Thursday afternoon’s game against Texas during an injury delay. The Rays have not announced the nature or severity of his injury.
McClanahan opened the fourth inning by hitting Ezequiel Duran with an 82.1 mph curveball. He then walked Brandon Nimmo after reaching a full count. Tampa Bay’s training staff examined McClanahan before Casey Legumina replaced him.
His declining fastball velocity supplied an immediate concern. McClanahan’s final two fastballs registered 92.9 and 93.3 mph, his slowest heaters of the afternoon. He averaged 94.6 mph and reached 97.3 earlier in the game.
McClanahan departed after three hitless innings, three strikeouts, two walks, one hit batter, and 49 pitches. He threw 29 strikes and left Tampa Bay leading 1-0. His season ERA dropped from 3.09 to 3.02.
The 29-year-old entered Thursday at 9-6 with an 88-to-33 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 96 innings. He had also posted a 3-1 record and 2.42 ERA during July.
McClanahan’s extensive injury history makes Thursday’s departure especially troubling. He missed 2024 following Tommy John surgery, then lost 2025 to a left triceps nerve issue. McClanahan underwent another procedure last August before finally returning this season.
His next start should be considered uncertain until Tampa Bay announces its initial diagnosis and evaluation plan. This story will be updated when additional information becomes available.
