Wembanyama turns Game 7 relief into Obsession

Wembanyama treats – After the San Antonio Spurs beat the OKC Thunder in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, Victor Wembanyama helped his team unwind with a post-game screening of the horror movie Obsession. The move went viral, and a New York cinema organization later extend

The day after the San Antonio Spurs needed everything they had in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals against the OKC Thunder, Victor Wembanyama made sure the night didn’t end in intensity.

Michael C. Wright reported that the star forward treated the Spurs to a screening of the new horror movie Obession. with the team trying to “wind down from the emotional toll of Game 7.” The idea sounded simple enough in the moment: shift gears after a win that carried real weight. How it landed with the group—whether it soothed their nerves or added a different kind of tension—was left unclear.

The film itself has been building attention. Obession was released on May 15, 2026, and it previously premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September. While it was relatively low-budget—costing between $750. 000 and $1 million to produce—it has already grossed over $150 million at the box office. a result that’s been a big win for Focus Features.

Its story follows Bear (Michael Johnston), who buys a supernatural toy that grants him a wish. Bear’s wish is for his friend, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), to fall in love with him. The wish comes true, but it carries consequences.

What happened next only amplified the “man of the people” vibe—though it also hinted at how quickly sports celebrity turns into real-world invitations. After news of Wemby’s post-Game 7 treat went viral. Film at Lincoln Center—one of New York City’s top film organizations—sent him an “offer” of tickets for an upcoming screening at Lincoln Center. The organization said it would offer Mr. Wembanyama tickets to its Sunday. June 7 screening of Bernardo Bertolucci’s five-and-a-half-hour epic 1900 while he is in the city later this week on a work-related trip.

The timing, though, collides with the NBA Finals schedule. The Spurs are set to face the hometown Knicks. and Games 3 and 4 will be played at Madison Square Garden on Monday. June 8. and Wednesday. June 10. With 1900 screening on June 7—one day before the Finals arrive in New York—accepting the ticket offer looks unlikely.

Still. the image of a Spurs team trying to process the emotional toll of Game 7 with horror-movie tickets is hard to shake. Even if the reaction inside the team never got fully explained. the gesture was immediate: for one night. Wembanyama gave them a shared screen instead of another long stretch of silence after a high-stakes win.

  1. This is so random lol. Like I get “wind down” but Obsession sounds like the movie about basketball? isn’t it a documentary?

  2. The article says he got an “offer” of tickets from some NY place and now it’s probably messing with the finals schedule, right? But also they say it might not happen because of Game 7 then Knicks?? I’m confused. Who even decides this stuff, the team or his PR person.

  3. Low budget movie but $150 million?? that part feels made up. And the spelling “Obession/Obsession” in the story is like… cmon. Still, I guess letting them watch horror after a win makes sense, but horror right before the NBA Finals sounds like a momentum killer. Or maybe it’s genius, I don’t know.
