WCVB Channel 5 names new weekend EyeOpener meteorologist

Meteorologist Sean Kelly is joining the weather team at Boston’s WCVB Channel 5, beginning on Saturday.

Kelly will handle weather forecasting for the station’s weekend EyeOpener newscasts and will contribute to WCVB’s digital, social media, streaming, and broadcast platforms, the station said in a press release Tuesday.

“To forecast the snowstorms, nor’easters, severe weather, heat, and humidity that make this region so unique is incredibly special,” Kelly said. “I’m honored to join such a respected team, return to the Northeast, make Boston my home, and serve viewers across New England.”

Kelly, a Rutgers University graduate, arrives from Salt Lake City’s KUTV, where he worked as a weekday meteorologist, according to his WCVB profile. 

Before his time there, he was at stations in Austin, and Corpus Christi, Texas. 

His lifelong fascination with weather inspired a career delivering forecasts across the nation, a journey Kelly describes as coming “full circle.”

“I’ve long admired WCVB’s commitment to outstanding journalism and weather coverage, so joining StormTeam 5 is truly a dream opportunity,” Kelly said. 

WCVB News Director Margaret Cronan described Kelly as an “excellent communicator” and a “tremendous asset” to the weather team. 

“Sean is a skilled forecaster with a passion for weather and a strong commitment to serving viewers,” WCVB General Manager Andrew Vrees said. “His track record covering a wide range of weather across the country makes him an outstanding addition to StormTeam 5.”
