Waymo robotaxis add Fourth of July fireworks inside

Waymo robotaxis – For Fourth of July weekend, Waymo will tweak its robotaxis’ in-car passenger screen with fireworks and patriotic greetings, while some vehicles also carry an American-flag-themed wrap. The holiday rollout comes as Waymo points to Independence Day’s heightened

When someone steps into a Waymo robotaxi for a Fourth of July ride, the celebration starts before the vehicle even pulls away. This weekend, riders will be greeted with a festive, patriot-themed in-car experience—fireworks displayed on the passenger screen.

Waymo said it will “tweak the in-car passenger screen” to display Fourth of July–themed greetings. The company also plans to program the vehicle icon on the screen to show stars above the robotaxi, along with a small fireworks animation.

For Waymo, the tweaks aren’t just about holiday cheer. They’re part of an ongoing tradition of changing the user experience during holidays as the robotaxi service scales to more customers. The company’s playful approach didn’t start with July. On April 1. for April Fools’ Day. Waymo programmed its robotaxis to prank riders by having the in-car automated voice system ask passengers to hum a tune before the start of their ride.

One rider described the message: “To help me calibrate my microphone, please hum a tune at normal volume for 5 seconds.” They started humming “some innocuous tune,” then heard the follow-up: “Just kidding! April Fools!”

This Independence Day, some Waymos will also run with visual changes outside the cabin. Waymo said it will deploy robotaxis with an American-flag-themed wrap. A Waymo spokesperson did not say how many robotaxis will have the wrap. but said some are in DC. where the company is conducting tests and has yet to deploy a commercial public service.

The company’s festive programming lands alongside a safety message that Waymo says riders shouldn’t ignore on a holiday it calls especially dangerous. In a statement, Waymo said July 4 can be one of the deadliest times of the year on US roads. The National Safety Council estimates that more than 400 people could die on Independence Day. in part because alcohol consumption is involved on the holiday.

Waymo is also drawing on research that ride-hailing can reduce some alcohol-related harms. A study from the National Bureau of Economics Research, published in 2021, found that the Uber platform reduced overall traffic fatalities in the US by 4% and alcohol-related traffic deaths by over 6%.

Heather Aijian, Waymo’s head of public affairs, linked the holiday theme to the company’s pitch. In a statement. Aijian said. “Independence is at the heart of the 4th of July. and we help riders claim theirs every single day.” She added that Waymo is “proud to provide the ultimate designated driver — the world’s most experienced Driver that never gets tired. distracted. or has one too many.”.

  1. I mean cool for the kids but I’m side-eyeing the screen showing fireworks while it’s driving. Like what if people get distracted? Also “stars above the robotaxi” sounds weirdly specific lol.

  2. Wait so they’re testing in DC and still not fully public but they put American flags on the cars like it’s already a parade. Seems kinda like propaganda for rides. And the April Fools hum thing… sounds like they’re messing with people’s mics for no reason.

  3. This is what happens when everything is an app. First it pranks you to hum and then the screen is doing fireworks… next they’re gonna play music and then be like “safety message!” and nobody reads it anyway. Also I don’t even know if those wraps are real or just stickers, like are they gonna get ripped off by the wind?
