The surprise isn’t just that Wayland is arriving in Linux desktop land. It’s that it’s arriving inside Minecraft.
A new software project called Waylandcraft brings a full Wayland compositor into the game—an unusual step for a technology that’s meant to replace the decades-old X11 windowing system. The project is the work of a developer known as [EVVIE]. who spent a considerable amount of time and effort getting it to work. The project also credits the build process as being done the old fashioned way, with no AI involvement.
For players who want to run it, the requirements are specific. Waylandcraft needs a Linux system running Minecraft, plus the Fabric mod loader and a few other tools. Once it’s up and running. the payoff is simple to describe and hard to ignore: users can launch arbitrary programs. and the windows can be placed within the Minecraft world as if they were in-game.
Windows aren’t locked to a single view, either. Users can place them in any orientation and interact with them like they would in a standard desktop environment—turning the game into something closer to a spatial workstation. [EVVIE] has also released all of the code under the GPL. inviting anyone who wants to try it out or build on the project to do so.
There’s a catch, and it’s the kind that matters if you mostly play with friends online. To show off the Wayland windows, you’ll need to do it in-person. Streaming the Wayland windows to other users through the server isn’t possible.
