Watch: Eliot Wolf congratulates 3 UDFAs who made Patriots roster

Cutdown day is usually the worst day in the NFL, as rosters shrink to under 60 percent of their training camp size ahead of Week 1.

That process typically hits undrafted free agents the hardest. Those under-the-radar prospects work tirelessly for their chance at an NFL roster, and many work for multiple offseasons without ever finding their way.

But for three Patriots rookies, their NFL dreams came true on Sunday, as they were brought into VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf’s office for the best possible news. Tanner Arkin, Channing Canada, and Khalil Jacobs each got those calls.

New England captured those moments in its latest episode of Forged in Foxborough, and Wolf was especially glowing about Arkin’s camp performance.

“You came to work every single day, busted your [butt], learned a bunch of different positions. Vrabel doesn’t lie about that,” Wolf said. “The physicality, the toughness, the strain, the effort. Like, you embody that every day.”

The Patriots have yet to fully flesh out their tight end/fullback group, but Arkin made his case to add depth to that group. He may still be a candidate to be inactive if Mike Vrabel decides to roll with just Hunter Henry, Eli Raridon, and Reggie Gilliam in that role.

But with how little depth the Patriots have, Arkin could certainly find a role for himself if a tight end goes down at any point in the season. And that he was able to beat out Jack Westover as a depth option speaks volumes to the way he performed in camp.

In Jacobs’s case, he plays a position (linebacker) that would be considered among the thinnest groups New England has. So of the three UDFAs, Jacobs is the most likely to get consistent playing time early in the season.

Jacobs made it impossible to deny him a roster spot.

“You did everything that you possibly could to make the team,” Wolf said. “We want to keep working with you and develop.”

And for Canada, he is in a similar boat to Jacobs, providing some defensive depth that the Patriots desperately need.

New England has a long history of late-draft and UDFA contributors on its roster. Bill Belichick was known for rostering at least one undrafted player on nearly all of his teams in Foxborough, and Vrabel isn’t afraid to do the same when a player makes a positive impression on him and the team.

“Every once in a while you get a young player, an undrafted guy or a late-round guy, that comes in and just knows how to make the team,” Wolf said to Canada.
