First responders were called to Rock Harbor in Orleans Tuesday after a deteriorating piece of military ordnance was found near the shoreline.

The item was safely secured and removed from the area before Massachusetts State Police bomb technicians and the U.S. Navy destroyed it in a controlled explosion around 5 p.m. at the Orleans Transfer Station.

Police warned residents and businesses in the area ahead of the blast.

Orleans police reminded residents that they should never touch or move an item that appears to be a military ordnance, shell, or other ammunition. Instead, they should move away from the area and immediately contact police.
