The sci-fi action movie has officially entered sequel development at Netflix following record viewership. War Machine stars Alan Ritchson and Dennis Quaid, and it amassed 139 million views on Netflix. That performance earned it a place among the 10 most popular Netflix original films of all time.
Director Patrick Hughes will return to helm the follow-up. Hughes is also set to co-write the screenplay with James Beaufort.
The original film’s premise is built on high-stakes training. Its synopsis reads: “During the final stage of US Army Ranger selection. an elite team’s training exercise turns into a fight for survival against an unimaginable threat.” With that setup. the sequel is poised to pick up from the same pressure-cooker energy that helped make the first film such a quick crowd favorite.
Ritchson and Quaid headline the ensemble alongside Stephan James, Esai Morales, Jai Courtney, Kieynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber. With that cast, Netflix is effectively banking on the same mix of action and intensity that powered the movie’s early surge.
A release date for the War Machine sequel has not been announced. In the meantime, Netflix has a packed calendar ahead this summer, including the return of Avatar: The Last Airbender.
