Wallace Pack Unit Holds Karmelo Anthony as Appeal Begins

Karmelo Anthony is reportedly being held at Texas’ Wallace Pack Unit, a medium-security facility with inmate capacity of 1,426 and 24/7 medical care. His legal team filed a notice of appeal on June 10, with experts expecting the case could hinge on whether the
Karmelo Anthony’s legal fight is moving forward even as questions around his case continue to swirl.
He is reportedly being held at the Wallace Pack Unit, a prison run under the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice describes the facility as a male prison with a current capacity of 1,426 inmates. Wallace Pack Unit also includes medical. dental. and mental health departments. with medical care reportedly available 24 hours a day. seven days a week.
The facility’s programming isn’t limited to confinement. It includes DWI Recovery Program, a Sex Offender Treatment Program, and a Sex Offender Education Program. Education offerings reportedly include “Literacy (Adult Basic Education/GED). CHANGES/Pre-Release. Cognitive Intervention; Career and Technology Programs: Construction Carpentry; Hospitality and Tourism.” Other programs reportedly offered include a “faith-based dormitory. ” “peer education. ” and “reentry planning. ” among others.
Newsweek reports that Anthony “will stay at the facility,” a point that matters amid reports of transfers. The outlet also denied claims alleging that prison warden Tallan Metcalf is related to the family of Austin Metcalf. with a Texas Department of Criminal Justice statement to Newsweek saying: “This is false. There is no relation.”.
Wallace Pack Unit is also described as a medium security prison. Newsweek reports the facility has faced lawsuits over “excessive heat and unsafe drinking water,” adding another layer of scrutiny as Anthony remains inside.
The timeline of the appeal adds urgency to the next chapter. Anthony’s legal team filed their notice of appeal on Wednesday, June 10. The filing preserves the defense’s ability to challenge the 19-year-old’s conviction. and legal experts cited by Newsweek believe the appeal may argue whether the trial was properly conducted.
That question is sharpened by details of the courtroom proceedings. The trial featured an all-white jury. Newsweek reports that three prospective Black jurors were removed from the case prior to the trial, and defense lawyers reportedly believe the removals were racially motivated.
The appellate process, the outlet notes, could take months—possibly longer—meaning the case may remain active long after the sentencing.
Anthony was convicted of first-degree murder on Tuesday, June 9 and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

So they’re just keeping him there while they appeal? Weird how “medical 24/7” is even a thing.
All-white jury removal of Black jurors… that’s what I keep hearing and honestly I don’t buy it. If the appeal takes months then he’s basically stuck forever anyway.
I saw something about the warden Tallan Metcalf being related to the Austin Metcalf thing and I don’t get why that even matters if he’s convicted. But then they say it’s false so maybe everyone’s just confused?? Also it says DWI and sex offender programs like that has anything to do with murder.
Man Texas prisons always got lawsuits. Excessive heat and unsafe drinking water sounds like the real appeal should be about that, not jury stuff. And why are they talking about programming like “faith-based dormitory”?? If he’s 19 and gets 35 years, the appeals probably just take his whole life anyway. I’m not saying he didn’t do it, I just feel like they’re burying the important parts.
