Vozinha’s dream – Cape Verde’s magical World Cup run ended in the Round of 32 on Friday as Lionel Messi and defending champions Argentina edged the Blue Sharks in extra time, 3-2. Behind the scoreline was a standout performance from 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, whose saves k

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Vozinha’s wish was simple. He wanted his mother to see him play at the World Cup.

On Friday, Cape Verde’s debut on the global stage didn’t end the way anyone in his country dreamed. The Blue Sharks still went out in the Round of 32, falling to Lionel Messi and defending World Cup champion Argentina. The final score was 3-2 in extra time — a result that felt unlikely until the last whistle turned the room back into reality.

“We have dignified Cape Verde as a national team in most parts of the world,” Vozinha said in Portuguese. “Today, we fought on an equal footing against Argentina.”

For most of the night, the fight was the story. Cape Verde did not win a match at the World Cup, and somehow that didn’t seem to matter. The run that began with belief — and a goalkeeper determined to make it last — became the kind of tournament fairytale that grows louder even after the final exit.

The journey started with a scoreless draw against Spain, with Vozinha leading the way. It set off a captivating subplot that followed the team into the group stage: the global effort it took for Vozinha’s mother to reach the United States to watch matches.

After that, Cape Verde produced two more dramatic draws that were enough to push the Blue Sharks into the knockout round. Then came Argentina — the No. 1 team in the tournament ranking, the champion with a superstar at its heart, widely regarded as the best ever.

Argentina ultimately found the breakthrough. Messi scored. and midway through the second half of extra time a corner kick delivered what became the game-winning tally to keep the champions alive. The match lasted more than 2½ hours in real time after the David-vs.-Goliath showdown began. with Vozinha repeatedly forcing the impossible question: how does a team like this keep it close for this long?.

In the final 60 minutes, Messi faced a goalkeeper who refused to blink. Cape Verde defender Pico Lopes — who was recruited to the team with a LinkedIn message — summed it up afterward: “He’s a quality. quality goalkeeper.” Lopes added. “Probably hasn’t gotten the recognition he deserves before this. … He’s a legend in Cape Verdean football.”.

The saves were specific, sharp, and constant:

In the 63rd minute, Messi tried to power a right-footed shot past the keeper from point-blank range. Vozinha came off his line to cut down the angle and absorbed the shot with his body.

In the 73rd minute, a Messi free kick looked destined to curl into the right side of the net, until Vozinha got just enough on an outstretched gloved hand to knock it away and preserve a 1-1 score.

In stoppage time, Messi went low with a free kick. Vozinha saw the ball through a wall of bodies and dropped to his knees to make the save.

Late in the first 15-minute extra time period, Messi collected a deflected ball at the top of the penalty area and fired. Vozinha dove to his left, punching the shot aside as well.

Cape Verde did all of it — and for large stretches, it was almost enough.

Cape Verde coach Bubista acknowledged the gulf in reputation without pretending the gap was bigger than the match proved. “Argentina is a world champion and they have one of the best players in the world. so that in itself speaks of the challenge it was for our team to overcome them. ” he said. “Above that, there’s the fact that we’re here for the first time. … We want to evolve so that we can have more opportunities to face the so-called big dogs of the tournament.”.

Even with the loss, the finish line wasn’t empty. Cape Verde is the smallest nation in terms of land area to make the World Cup. with a population about 1% the size of Argentina’s. Still, the Blue Sharks will receive $11 million from FIFA for reaching the tournament’s stage where they were still standing.

But the money wasn’t the only payoff. During the run. fans around the world reached out to say they had earned their support — the kind of attention that follows a team that never stops making noise. even when it can’t silence the favorites. Lopes put it plainly after the final whistle: “Nobody has to ask where Cape Verde is now,” he said. “They know where we are.”.
