Virginia man faces sentencing after au pair murder scheme

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday for the killings of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan, whom prosecutors say was lured to the home as part of a plan. A jury convicted him of murder and chil

For Brendan Banfield, the courtroom has narrowed to a date on the calendar: Friday, when he is scheduled to be sentenced for a double killing prosecutors say was staged—built around the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, and a set-up intended to remove Christine Banfield.

Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, faces the possibility of life in prison. Jurors in February convicted him of murder as well as child endangerment after determining that the couple’s 4-year-old daughter was home during the killings.

In court, Banfield’s defense claimed a different story. He said he was having an affair with the family’s au pair and that he shot Joseph Ryan after encountering Ryan attacking his wife on the morning of Feb. 24, 2023. Prosecutors. however. argued that Banfield and Magalhães had arranged for Ryan to come to the Banfields’ home as a fall guy. with the intent of getting rid of Christine Banfield. a pediatric intensive care nurse.

During Banfield’s trial. Magalhães testified that she told Brendan Banfield she wanted to marry her and have children with her. but that he needed to “get rid of” his wife first. She said he didn’t want a divorce because “she would have more money than he would” and because he wanted custody of the couple’s daughter.

Magalhães also described a web of deception meant to direct Ryan to the house in Herndon, Virginia. She told jurors that she and Brendan Banfield impersonated Christine Banfield on a website for sexual fetishes. The plan. she said. was to use that website to lure Ryan to the home for a sexual encounter involving a knife—and then stage the scene to look as though a violent intruder had shot Christine and attacked the household.

Her testimony put the timing of the killings in sharp focus. On the day of the killings, she said she waited in a car outside the house with the Banfields’ child. When Ryan arrived, she called Banfield, who was waiting at a nearby McDonald’s. She said the pair took the child to the basement and then went to the bedroom, where they encountered Ryan.

Magalhães told the court that Brendan Banfield shot Ryan and then stabbed Christine Banfield with the knife Ryan had brought. She testified that when she saw Ryan moving, she fired a second shot that killed him.

Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter after agreeing to testify against Banfield. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison after Banfield’s trial.

At Friday’s sentencing, the case will hinge not on what happened in the most dramatic moment, but on the motive behind it—whether Banfield’s version of a sudden attack or prosecutors’ depiction of a deliberate scheme ultimately fits the evidence jurors already convicted him on.

  1. So they convicted him but now it’s “staged”? That word alone makes me feel like people are getting away with stuff.

  2. IRS law enforcement guy and au pair?? I don’t even get how that works. Like did the IRS help him or what. Prison sounds too good.

  3. Wait so the au pair testified he wanted custody and money… but how is that not part of the scheme against him too? Also “double killing” like why is the kid endangerment separate??

  4. I saw someone mention “fake fetish website” and I’m like… who even uses that stuff, that’s crazy. Sounds like they already had the story they wanted and then searched for evidence. Life in prison though, that’s wild. Wonder if the au pair gets less time because she “helped”
