Stewart McLean’s disappearance began quietly, with a simple concern from those who hadn’t heard from a man they knew. Then the timeline tightened—Friday, May 15 to Monday, May 20—and by the following week, the search turned into a homicide investigation.
McLean. 45. was best known for his work as Barfly on “Virgin River.” He was reported missing on Monday to the Squamish Royal Canadian Mounted Police after he had not been seen since Friday. May 15. Law enforcement said he was last seen at his home in Lions Bay. British Columbia. Canada. adding that they were “very concerned for Stewart’s health and well-being.”.
On Thursday, police made a major shift in the case. While McLean’s absence had started as a missing person investigation. the RCMP told the public that the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the search—and that investigators now believed McLean may have been a victim of a homicide.
In an IHIT announcement, a press release said, “On May 20, IHIT deployed and assumed conduct of the investigation. Squamish RCMP continues to work closely with IHIT and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) to advance the investigation. Squamish RCMP initiated an investigation and, through investigative efforts, uncovered evidence that led investigators to believe Mr. McLean was victim of homicide.”.
IHIT Cpl. Esther Tupper added in a press statement that investigators are still working to build a clear picture of what happened before May 15. 2026. She said. “As the investigation continues to unfold. homicide investigators are working to collect and analyze evidence. review CCTV footage and conduct interviews to build a timeline of Mr. McLean’s activities prior to May 15, 2026. We are pursuing all available leads as we work to find answers for the family. friends and loved ones of Mr. McLean.”.
Police also stressed that McLean’s disappearance is most likely “an isolated incident.” At the time the statement was shared. investigators had not provided details on suspects or theories about what happened. What they did reveal in a media release shared with People on Friday night was that they had found McLean’s remains in the Lions Bay area.
In the days following, the personal fallout became impossible to ignore. McLean’s agency, Lucas Talent Inc., confirmed his death with an emotional post on Facebook written by agent Jodi Caplan. The message read: “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved client, Stew McLean. I was fortunate to have worked with Stew for more than 10 years. He was always such a pleasure to deal with – dedicated, professional, eager, and endlessly funny!. Many casting directors have reached out to share their condolences with Stew’s family and with our agency. and every message says the same thing: what a truly great guy he was. and how deeply he will be missed. Rest in peace, Stew. xo”.
The pace of the investigation has been swift for a family still trying to understand the moment everything changed—from a missing person report filed after May 15, to IHIT taking over on May 20, to the discovery of McLean’s remains in the Lions Bay area.
Now, police are asking for help from anyone who may know something about McLean’s disappearance or the investigation. The IHIT information line is 1-877-551-IHIT (4448), and tips can also be sent by email at ihitinfo@rcmp–grc.gc.ca.
For fans of “Virgin River” and anyone who knew McLean through his work, the biggest question remains the same: what happened between the last time he was seen and the evidence that led investigators to believe he may have been killed.

Wow that’s horrible. Lions Bay is so peaceful, like how does that even happen?
I didn’t even know he was missing, I just saw Virgin River clips. They said CCTV and then suddenly homicide?? feels like they skipped a bunch of steps.
Wait so he was last seen Friday May 15 and they only confirmed death a week later, but IHIT took over Monday May 20? That sounds backwards to me. Also the article says “very concerned for Stewart’s health”… so was it first like an overdose or something??
This is why I don’t trust those Canadian coastal towns. Everybody thinks it’s all whales and pretty views, but there’s always some weird stuff. “Barfly” on Virgin River like that’s not a character name?? I’m confused whether they mean the actor or the role lol. Prayers though, murder suspected is awful.
