Varsho placed on IL as Kirk returns vs Yankees

Varsho placed – Toronto reintegrates Alejandro Kirk and adds Davis Schneider to the roster for the home opener against the New York Yankees, but Daulton Varsho’s left wrist inflammation sends him to the 10-day injured list and Tyler Heineman is designated for assignment.
Alejandro Kirk was back in the Blue Jays’ plans, but the day still ended with a different kind of silence in the lineup. Toronto reinstated Kirk from the injured list and placed outfielder Daulton Varsho on the 10-day IL with left wrist inflammation.
In the corresponding moves, the Blue Jays recalled utility man Davis Schneider from triple-A and designated backup catcher Tyler Heineman for assignment.
Friday’s home series opener against the New York Yankees is where the changes show most clearly. Kirk and Schneider will both be in the starting group against Yankees left-hander Ryan Weathers. with Kirk batting clean-up and playing left field. Schneider takes the roster spot coming off a 14-game stint in triple-A.
Kirk’s return has a clear timeline and a visible cost. He fractured his left thumb when he was hit by a pitch while catching in a game on April 3. Surgery followed shortly after, and since early June, he’s been making rehab appearances with single-A Dunedin and Buffalo.
The injury didn’t just pause him—it also exposed a difficult start at the plate this season. Kirk was an all-star for the second time in his career last year, but to begin this season he was cold: in five games, he went three-for-20 with one home run and two walks.
Varsho’s ailment adds another layer of uncertainty. He left last Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles with a wrist injury, and MRIs initially came back clean. He has made two appearances since, but he has not taken an at-bat. The IL stint is retroactive to June 10.
On the season, Varsho is at a .738 OPS with five home runs in 64 games. For a player whose availability has now become a question mark week to week, the key detail is that it’s his left wrist—limiting him even when he’s showing up on the field.
Toronto’s roster shuffle also reflects the aftermath of Kirk’s injury. Heineman lost his backup job to Brandon Valenzuela, who has starred for the team since joining after the Kirk injury. The rookie has a .790 OPS with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in 46 games. while Heineman enters his assignment trouble with a .410 OPS in 31 appearances.
Schneider’s path back to the majors is more complicated than a simple promotion. He returns to the Blue Jays after a 14-game triple-A stint where he batted .188. but still managed an on-base percentage of .550. That OBP was built through 24 walks in 60 plate appearances. At the MLB level this season, the 27-year-old has struggled with an OPS of .506 and just nine hits in 38 games.
Between Kirk’s return and Varsho’s IL placement, the Blue Jays are heading into the weekend with answers they can use now—and a couple of problems they won’t be able to fully measure until the field tells the story.
