United’s new SFO United Club nears 4,000-ft terrace

United Airlines plans a brand-new United Club at San Francisco International Airport with a 4,000-square-foot outdoor terrace overlooking the airfield, aiming to open by the end of 2026. The lounge, spread across 25,000 square feet in Terminal 2, will include
By the time travelers in San Francisco start seeing their way out to the airfield. United wants them to have somewhere to linger first. The airline is building a brand-new United Club at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). and the centerpiece is already taking shape as a 4. 000-square-foot outdoor terrace overlooking the airfield.
At the moment, the space is still very much a construction zone—drilling and hammering included. But the concept is clear: this would be the largest outdoor space United has ever offered in one of its lounges. and it’s designed to feel like part of the Bay Area rather than a strict indoor waiting room.
United’s new United Club at SFO will be the carrier’s fourth—and largest—United Club in the airport. It’s planned for Terminal 2, directly below the Maple Leaf Lounge operated by its Star Alliance partner, Air Canada.
Inside, the entire United Club will span 25,000 square feet, making it bigger than the airline’s three standard outposts at SFO. It will also be slightly smaller than United’s higher-end Polaris Lounge at the airport, which serves long-haul premium flyers and high-level elite members.
The terrace itself is designed with both privacy and flexibility in mind. It will feature an expansive open area with seating for solo and group travelers, plus a “pass-through bar” intended to let people grab drinks without stepping inside.
United also plans for the outdoor area to be usable across seasons. The airline hopes that a partially covered setup with heaters—combined with the Bay Area’s mild winters—will allow flyers to use the outdoor section year-round. During warmer months, the outdoor space is expected to offer shade.
Beyond the terrace, United is pitching the lounge as more than just bigger. The airline teased a “San Francisco eclectic” vibe, with nods to the city’s outdoor parks and art scene.
The timeline is set to land in the same moment travelers are planning around anyway: United hasn’t published a formal opening date, but the new SFO United Club is expected to debut by the end of 2026.
This build is part of a larger push for 2026 lounge expansion. United is planning three outposts nationwide to open next year. including a nearly 40. 000-square-foot club at Dulles International Airport (IAD) that will open alongside a brand-new terminal and a 54. 000-square-foot club at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Like San Francisco, the Houston location will also feature an outdoor terrace for members.
Airlines have been leaning into outdoor spaces more aggressively. not just for aesthetics but for the appeal of fresh-air access while you wait. Two of American Airlines’ most recently announced Admirals Clubs—scheduled for Austin and Nashville—will include outdoor decks. Delta Air Lines is also putting terraces into its premium lounge strategy. with outdoor areas at two Delta One Lounges in Los Angeles and Seattle. and the Seattle lounge won a TPG Award earlier this year for best new airline lounge in America.
Even outside airline-branded clubs, outdoor lounging is spreading. American Express Centurion Lounge at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is among the nicest in Amex’s lineup, and terraces like these are becoming part of what travelers now expect.
United says it’s still finalizing plans for the new SFO lounge. and a closer look is expected once details are locked in. For travelers at SFO. the change is already easy to imagine: instead of waiting indoors. they’ll have a terrace—overlooking the airfield—ready to turn a layover into something closer to a pause.

So basically the rich people get a patio to stare at planes now. Cool cool.
Wait is this gonna be like outside where anyone can just walk up? Or only for some membership thing? I’m confused because it says pass-through bar but doesn’t say how you get access.
4,000 square feet sounds tiny? Like I feel like that’s nothing compared to how big SFO is. Also they say “end of 2026” like the construction noise isn’t already annoying enough right now… but hey heaters right? maybe it’s just for people who don’t have to deal with delays.
United really out here building a terrace under Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounge like it’s a mall food court. Pass-through bar sounds nice though, but knowing airports, they’ll make it complicated and you’ll still be stuck inside 30 minutes before boarding anyway. 25,000 sq ft lounge though… do they mean for everyone or just elites? because they always “aim” for opening and then it opens half done.
