United Japan – United will launch nonstop SFO–Sapporo flights for winter and add a new Chicago–Narita service from October, expanding Japan access.
A winter getaway to Japan’s snow country just got easier: United is preparing to launch nonstop service to Sapporo, positioning the route as a new draw for skiers and snowboarders heading to Hokkaido.
Starting in December. United plans to begin nonstop flights from the United States to Sapporo. Japan. with the city serving as a headline destination on the northern island of Hokkaido.. Sapporo is widely known among travelers for its winter sports reputation and for hosting the renowned Sapporo Snow Festival every February.
United will be the first airline to offer nonstop service between the U.S.. and Japan’s northernmost main island.. The carrier will operate the new route from San Francisco International Airport (SFO), with flights planned to start on Dec.. 11.. Service is scheduled to run three times per week from SFO to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport (CTS). and United says flights will operate during the winter months. kicking off just before the holiday season.
As Hokkaido is known for its prime conditions for skiers and snowboarders. the new Sapporo offering is expected to appeal both to leisure travelers looking for a fresh ski destination and to those interested in extending a Japan trip beyond Tokyo.. The move also underscores how United is continuing to concentrate its strategy on Japan. where the airline says it already has the strongest footprint among U.S.. carriers.
Alongside the winter launch, United is also expanding Tokyo access from Chicago.. The carrier announced plans to begin nonstop service from O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Tokyo’s Narita International Airport (NRT) in October. while noting that its existing ORD service to Haneda (HND) will remain in place.
United’s new ORD–NRT service is set to start on Oct. 24, adding a daily connection between the Chicago hub and Narita. With this addition, the airline says travelers in the Chicago region will have a wider choice of flights to Tokyo.
United’s international network planner Patrick Quayle said the airline is giving customers more ways to reach Japan, whether they are planning a business trip to Tokyo with additional time to explore or building a bigger adventure across Asia.
The airline will operate the SFO–Sapporo route using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.. Sapporo will become the airline’s fifth Japanese airport. joining its existing operations to both Tokyo hubs (Haneda and Narita) as well as Osaka and Tokoname. the latter currently served exclusively from United’s base in Guam.
Hokkaido’s growing airline attention is not limited to United.. Its Star Alliance partner Air Canada also announced Sapporo routes earlier this year. with those services set to launch just days after United’s.. That parallel timing could mean stronger capacity as travelers plan winter trips, particularly around peak seasonal demand.
In addition, travelers may be watching for new hotel developments in the region. It was noted that Hokkaido will eventually be home to a new Park Hyatt hotel, a detail that adds to the broader appeal of Sapporo as both a sports-focused destination and a stop for upscale stays.
Meanwhile, United’s Chicago expansion fits into a wider explanation of why Narita matters to the airline’s long-haul structure.. While Haneda is closer to the Tokyo city center. Narita functions as a hub-like gateway for United. which operates so-called fifth-freedom services from NRT to cities across Asia and the South Pacific. including routes from Narita to Cebu and Guam. Saipan. and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia.
For the ORD–NRT route, United says it will fly the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The airline also indicated that, as of this fall, it will link Narita to all but one of its U.S. hubs, leaving only Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) as the exception.
Taken together, the airline’s new Sapporo ski route and the added Tokyo service from Chicago signal that United is continuing to press its advantage in Japan while tailoring capacity to seasonal demand and to travelers looking for more flight options into both Tokyo airports.
