UMass Dartmouth football player Marvins Antoine died early on Saturday, Sept. 19 after he was stabbed in Providence, Rhode Island, police announced.
Police chief Oscar L. Perez said in a Saturday news conference that Antoine, 18, was stabbed in the chest during an altercation that began outside the Mezzo Lounge and continued in a Wendy’s parking lot.
Teammate Kensley Macean, 19, suffered non-life-threatening wounds to the head, neck and left arm during the incident, Perez said.
Police identified the suspect as Chukuwnonso Uzoma-eze, 19, a student at the university. His vehicle was identified by surveillance cameras, police said, and he was arrested by UMass Dartmouth police.
He faces an arrest warrant for murder and officials are working to extradite him to face charges, said Perez, who indicated the investigation is ongoing.
“There were several patrons that were trying to get into the establishment and at some point, it was determined that no one else was coming in because it was over capacity,” Perez said. “A female was leaving and was involved in an altercation with the victims. The female actually knew the suspect, and there’s where the disturbance and the disagreement escalated to this unfortunate homicide.”
Antoine was a freshman running back and Macean a freshman defensive back at the Division III school.
“Our hearts and prayers are very much with Marvins’ family, friends, classmates, and teammates as we mourn his loss together. We also send our prayers and best wishes for Kensley’s recovery, and hope that he will be able to resume his education here soon,” Chancellor Mark A. Fuller said in a statement to the Providence Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network.
