UFC Freedom 250 suit targets White House fight grounds

A federal lawsuit filed on Saturday seeks to stop UFC Freedom 250—scheduled for June 14 on the White House South Lawn—arguing the administration’s approval process violated federal law, improperly commercialized public land, and skipped required environmental
By the time most people in Washington are thinking about Flag Day plans, construction crews have been working for months on an octagon-shaped centerpiece just outside the White House.
Now. two Virginia residents backed by the Public Integrity Project are asking a federal court to stop the Ultimate Fighting Championship event planned for Sunday. June 14. before the first bell rings. They argue the “UFC Freedom 250” fight—timed to coincide with President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday and framed as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration—crosses legal lines and turns federal space into a commercial spectacle.
“It’s fundamentally a private, commercial, corrupt use of our most sacred national monuments for private gain,” Brendan Ballou, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said. “And that is what is motivating this lawsuit.”
The White House has dismissed the challenge as an “obstructionist. baseless. and dilatory” effort to “prevent President Trump from hosting what will undoubtedly go down as one of the most historic sporting events in our Nation’s history during our semiquincentennial celebration.” In the administration’s view. the fight is “no different than the various other White House-hosted events on the South Lawn and properly permitted events on the Ellipse and National Mall throughout the year.”.

So they’re suing over UFC being at the White House? That seems kinda dramatic.
Wait, is this the one where they built that octagon thing outside the White House already? If the crews are there, how is a lawsuit gonna stop it like… late? Also Trump’s 80th birthday timing feels like they’re just trying to make it patriotic on purpose.
I don’t get why they called it “commercialized” like it isn’t literally a stadium event, even if it’s on government land. If other events happen there all year, then what law did they break exactly? Sounds like the White House already did the permits, so the “environmental” part feels like a reach.
Brendan Ballou saying “sacred national monuments” is rich when they do everything under the sun at the Mall. But also, if UFC is timed to the 250th anniversary and Paramount+ and CBS are involved, then yeah it’s basically a TV commercial dressed up as history. I bet they’ll still fight anyway and the lawsuit just delays it for clicks.
