Bell: Smith UCP vows to flesh out exit costs

If Albertans want to go down the road to independence it “will require setting up an entire new federal government.” The budget boss says a Republic of Alberta would have to deal with international relations and trade issues. “If the new country is depending on oil they’re going to need to know how the heck they’re going to sell it.” Nixon adds it isn’t realistic to think Alberta wouldn’t be on the hook for a share of Canada’s debt. The man wants Albertans to get
numbers that are “extremely credible.” Some in the independence movement say Smith’s numbers are so much manure and look like fear-mongering. Nixon pushes back. “Bringing up facts is not fear-mongering. I think it’s actually the opposite, which is to bring stability to the conversation.” He adds Albertans have every right to be frustrated with what Ottawa has done to Alberta. He says everybody in Alberta thinks the province needs a better deal. The question is whether that deal comes with Alberta in Canada or is
it better to split from the country. Obviously Nixon is picking the first option, Alberta in Canada. “The situation has changed. It’s not perfect. We’ve got a long way to go. The premier is winning more arguments than she’s losing.”
Alberta independence, UCP, Smith, Nixon, federal government, Canada debt, international trade, oil exports, Ottawa
Debt share is the real issue, like… why would Alberta sign up for Canada’s mess.
So he’s saying independence means Alberta has to run trade with other countries? Like ok but we already do trade?? This sounds like fear talk to me, not numbers.
“Manure” lol. I mean I get it, but I also don’t trust anybody in politics when they say their math is “extremely credible.” If Ottawa is the problem then why would staying in Canada magically fix oil sales like??
Wait so the premier’s “winning more arguments” but people are still mad? I swear this is just splitting hair. Also international relations?? Wouldn’t we just keep using the same agreements anyway, like NATO stuff, whatever. And the debt part… I heard someone say independence means no debt, but maybe that was fake news? Idk.
