UCLA charged man after assaults on five women

Prosecutors say Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi, 29, attacked five women at UCLA on the night of May 28, including four students, and was detained by UCLA Police after a failed attempt to kidnap and assault a woman. He has pleaded not guilty.
At UCLA, the campus quiet didn’t last long on May 28. Within the span prosecutors described, a man allegedly moved through multiple dorm areas and attacked five women—four of them UCLA students—before being detained by police.
Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi, 29, has been charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The charges include one felony count of attempted kidnapping to commit a forcible rape. three felony counts of assault with the attempt to commit a forcible rape during a first-degree burglary. and two felony counts of assault likely to produce great bodily injury.
“These disturbing attacks strike at the core of campus safety. traumatizing five victims and unsettling campus life. ” Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Nathan Hochman said in a media statement. “We are working closely with the UCLA Police Department to bring the attacker to justice and ensure that he will be held fully accountable for his actions.”.
Prosecutors said the alleged assaults began around 11:30 p.m. A woman was attacked, and she managed to run away while keeping her phone.
Authorities then said Akindahunsi followed two students to their dorm room and sexually assaulted them both. After that, prosecutors said he entered a different dorm building on campus and tried to kidnap a woman to assault her. That attempt failed: the woman escaped, and he fled.
Later, prosecutors said Akindahunsi assaulted a woman in the hallway of her dorm. Someone else intervened during the attack, according to the district attorney’s release. Police detained him afterward.
Akindahunsi has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
If convicted, prosecutors said he faces 32 years to life in state prison. He would also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

32 years to life?? That’s insane. UCLA should’ve had more security that night.
I can’t even imagine being those girls. The part about attempted kidnapping to commit a forcible rape sounds like it was some kind of planned thing, like he knew where to go.
Hold on, didn’t UCLA police already stop him? It says he was detained after a failed attempt, so like… is he being charged for the first attack only or all of it? The timeline is kinda confusing.
This is why campus “safety” never feels real. Like, 11:30 pm and he just walks through dorms?? Also I read somewhere that sex offender registration is automatic but then again not always, so I’m not sure. Hope they throw the book at him either way, tired of people acting like this is rare.
