Uber limits AI spending to $1,500 per month

Uber has moved to rein in employee spending on AI by putting a hard monthly limit on usage inside the company. Bloomberg reports the new rule caps spend at $1,500 per employee and $1,500 per agentic coding tool, covering tools such as Anthropic’s Claude Code and Cursor.

Uber says the usage is tracked through an internal dashboard that each employee has access to. In certain cases, the company allows the caps to be exceeded with permission.

The cutback didn’t come out of nowhere. Earlier this year. Uber’s CTO said the company had blown through its entire annual AI budget in a matter of four months. That pace. the reporting says. followed internal pressure for staff to use AI “as much as possible. ” alongside competitive elements: employees were ranked on internal leaderboards based on how much they used AI.

The shift in tone is also reflected in Uber leadership’s skepticism about how directly AI translates into measurable outcomes for customers. Uber’s COO. Andrew Macdonald. has publicly questioned the productivity gains. saying during a podcast appearance that “it’s very hard to draw a line” between AI usage and new consumer features.

Between those two moments lies the tension many companies are wrestling with right now: enthusiasm inside the office. budget reality at the end of the month. Uber’s internal spending cap turns that tension into something employees can see in a dashboard—and it comes after the company acknowledged it reached its annual AI budget alarmingly fast.

For now, Uber’s message is clear even if the payoff remains harder to quantify: AI can be used, but not without a ceiling. The company’s approach may be a reminder that, even when AI adoption is fast, controlling costs is still the part that shows up in real time.
