U.S. World Cup opener draws 24.886 million viewers

U.S. World – The U.S. men’s national team’s opening match at SoFi Stadium for the 2026 World Cup against Paraguay pulled 24.886 million viewers on Friday night, combining Fox’s 15.986 million with an 8.9 million Spanish-language audience across Telemundo, Peacock and Telem

Friday night at SoFi Stadium had a different kind of noise behind it.

The U.S. men’s national team’s 2026 World Cup opener landed with 24.886 million viewers. a headline number for a sport that once lived far from the center of American Sundays. The audience total came from 15.986 million watching the 4-1 victory over Paraguay on Fox. plus 8.9 million tuned in through the Spanish-language telecast on Telemundo. Peacock. and Telemundo streaming platforms.

The scale was hard to ignore when set beside other major American events. The first four games of the NBA Finals averaged 19.6 million viewers. The 2025 World Series averaged 15.863 million. And through the first four games of the Stanley Cup Final, the audience averaged 5.0 million.

There’s another piece of the story, too: the World Cup audience figure reflects only the first U.S. match of the tournament. As more games roll forward, the potential for higher numbers becomes the obvious question—particularly if the U.S. keeps moving into the knockout stage.

The next test arrives quickly. The U.S. squad returns to action on Friday at 3:00 p.m. ET against Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle.
