The Cowboys went into their offseason program with a competition between Tyler Guyton and Nate Thomas for the left tackle job. The job appears about decided after one padded practice in training camp.
Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said at his news conference Tuesday that the competition isn’t over, but Guyton is the clear leader. Thomas had been scheduled to take first-team reps in practice Tuesday.
The Cowboys started camp with the left tackle spot as the only question on offense from last season with every starter returning, and Guyton was expected to win the job.
The Cowboys drafted Guyton with the 29th overall pick in 2024, 204 picks before selecting Thomas. Guyton, though, has struggled with inconsistency and injuries.
He has missed nine games in two seasons.
In 2025, Guyton’s knee injury in training camp gave Thomas reps with the first-team offense in practice. Thomas ended up making his first four career starts in 2025, but Pro Bowl left guard Tyler Smith started the final four games at left tackle when Guyton was out with a high-ankle sprain.
Guyton played primarily right tackle at the University of Oklahoma.
