Ty Simpson’s strong preseason finale still not enough to earn Rams QB2 nod over Stetson Bennett
Los Angeles Rams quarterback Ty Simpson was efficient in their win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the preseason on Thursday.
The Los Angeles Rams went undefeated in three games in the preseason after beating the Los Angeles Chargers, 20-18, at SoFi Stadium on Thursday.
Ty Simpson made a good account of himself, throwing 18-of-23 for 119 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions. He connected with Brennan Presley for an 11-yard score to give the Rams the lead, 10-7, in the second quarter. They never relinquished the advantage en route to the victory.
It was Simpson’s best performance in the preseason, boosting his chance to get the nod as the backup quarterback to Matthew Stafford.
Despite the promising rookie’s laudable showing, Rams coach Sean McVay said he remains undecided between Simpson and Stetson Bennett on who should be the QB2, as reported by The Athletic’s Nate Atkins.
“Sean McVay didn’t commit to a No. 2 QB tonight between Stetson Bennett and Ty Simpson. He said he likes what he’s seen out of both and will make the decision after giving it more thought,” wrote Atkins on X.
Bennett did not play against the Chargers, with Matthew Caldwell seeing action as the other signal-caller. Caldwell went 5-of-10 for 31 yards, one touchdown, and zero interceptions.
Many were surprised when the Rams selected the 23-year-old Simpson with the No. 13 pick in April. While the 38-year-old Stafford, the reigning MVP, remains the team’s go-to guy, Simpson should be a key piece in the team’s future-building.
The 28-year-old Bennett, meanwhile, is in his fourth year in Los Angeles. He has never seen a single snap since the Rams drafted him in the fourth round in 2023.
The Rams will face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1.
