Ty Simpson shrugs off Rams doubters with 13th pick

Quarterback Ty Simpson says he didn’t care about the reaction after the Los Angeles Rams took him with the 13th overall pick, framing it as his job to prove the decision right while learning from Matthew Stafford in the offseason program.

When the Los Angeles Rams used their first-round draft pick on quarterback Ty Simpson, the debate didn’t wait. Fans and observers immediately questioned the move: why spend that pick on a player instead of someone who could help Matthew Stafford win another Super Bowl. and whether head coach Sean McVay even wanted Simpson.

Simpson, though, said he was aware of the noise—and didn’t plan to let it reach his day-to-day focus. “I really didn’t care, to be honest with you,” Simpson told SI.com. “Everybody can have an opinion, but it’s my job to take care of my business. So. the Rams took me with the 13th overall pick. so now it’s my job to be the best player I can be. the best Ty I can be. and go out there and prove them right. I don’t really listen to all that. My job is to make sure to do whatever my team needs me to do to win and that’s what I’m going to do.”.

The offseason program has already given Simpson a front-row seat to one of the league’s veterans in the same position. Simpson said Stafford has been a good teammate in the early part of the offseason program. describing the experience of sitting in the room with him as energizing. “It’s great. Just sitting there in the room with Matthew, it’s super, super fun. It’s awesome. He’s just an A-plus guy, A-plus player,” Simpson said. “I think it’s really. really cool to. one. be in the room with Matthew. who has done it at a high level for so long.”.

With Stafford now signed through 2027, Simpson’s moment as a starter may still be years away. But he’s starting the work now—preparing for the day his name is called, even if the quarterback room remains led by Stafford for the foreseeable future.

  1. “Prove them right” sounds like something every QB says after the draft. But if Sean McVay really wanted Stafford help, why not get a receiver or lineman first? I don’t buy it.

  2. Wait so Stafford is still there and they took Simpson anyway… so is this like a replacement plan or what? Because 13th overall seems kinda early to be “years away.” Also how is he learning from Stafford if Stafford’s 2027 contract means he’ll never leave? Confusing.

  3. I’m sorry but I feel like fans are right to question it. You can’t just draft a QB and assume it helps Stafford win right now, especially at 13. And the quote about not listening… ok? That’s nice, but the Rams always talk like this and then the picks don’t matter if they can’t score. Maybe they’re doing it for the future, but the future doesn’t win Super Bowls by itself.
