Twins news: Minnesota urged to fix self-inflicted bullpen problem before trade deadline

The Minnesota Twins are planning to buy at the MLB trade deadline coming up on August 3rd. Minnesota has won five of its last seven games, and is three games back in the AL Central. Additionally, they are only 1.5 games back in the AL Wild Card race.

The postseason dream is very much alive for this ballclub. Whether it be the division or Wild Card, the Twins have a chance to sneak in and make something happen. Before that, they need some help at the MLB trade deadline. And one analyst recently called on Minnesota to address a specific area of need.

“They desperately need bullpen help. We talked about the guys they gave up, but now you need to replenish your bullpen. Your offense is actually playing really well. Going into spring training, there were a lot of question marks… but you have depth in that lineup. If you add some pitching, you can put yourself in a (good) position,” former MLB outfielder Chris Young said on MLB Now.

The Twins offense has played well so far. They are top 10 in MLB in terms of runs scored this season. They are also slightly outside the top 10 for doubles, home runs, and batting average.

However, Minnesota’s bullpen has left something to be desired. They own the fifth-worst bullpen ERA to this point in the season. This unit also ranks in the bottom 10 for strikeouts and opponent batting average.

Adding to this bullpen is certainly a logical step for the Twins. Making this move is certainly easier said than done. But if they want to truly go for it, bringing in a reliever or two before the MLB trade deadline would be a smart play to make.
