Council notebook May 26: Turtlefest fees waived

Article content Staff will investigate the use of existing facilities and potential partnerships. In its presentation, the group noted that each indoor league is capped at eight teams and rosters are filled within minutes. Players and teams who don’t make the cut must drive elsewhere to play. “Volleyball is one of the most social sports,” said a group information page. “A public court becomes a place to belong – where newcomers, neighbours, and long-time residents connect and build friendships. Tillsonburg’s sense of community is one
of its greatest strengths. This court would help nurture it.” Councillor Chris Parker, a member of the Recreation and Sports Advisory Committee, pointed out that volleyball isn’t currently mentioned in the town’s sports and recreation master plan. One suggestion made during the meeting was to use arena floors for play while the ice is removed. “There were some great ideas just from the presenters alone, and this is something that will be very beneficial for recreation moving forward,” Parker added.

Wait so they just waived Turtlefest fees? That seems random.
Good, my kid keeps saying volleyball is the only thing that keeps people talking. But how do you even fit it in when the ice is there?
So because volleyball “isn’t in the master plan” they’re gonna change something? I don’t get it. If rosters fill in minutes then maybe people should just get there earlier lol. Also are they still charging indoor league teams or what.
This sounds nice but it’s weird they said indoor league cap is 8 teams like that’s a rule nobody questions. If people have to drive elsewhere to play then waiving some fees for Turtlefest doesn’t fix the main issue. Still though, a court for beginners sounds like a win, I guess.
