Tulsi Gabbard Resigns as DNI Effective June 30, 2026

Tulsi Gabbard’s final act as Director of National Intelligence is already set in ink. In a resignation letter obtained by Fox News. the former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii wrote that she would leave the job effective June 30. 2026. because her husband. Abraham. has been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.

“I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle,” Gabbard wrote. She added that she could not “in good conscience ask him to face this fight alone while I continue in this demanding and time-consuming position.”

Gabbard framed her decision as a matter of time and duty at home. writing. “Abraham’s strength and love have sustained me through every challenge. ” and concluding with gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for “the last year and a half.” She also wrote that she was “deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the last year and a half.”.

Within hours, President Donald Trump publicly accepted the change in tone that matched the administration’s broader style. In a Truth Social post. Trump wrote that “unfortunately. after having done a great job. Tulsi Gabbard will be leaving the Administration. ” and said she should “rightfully” spend time caring for her husband. Trump added. “I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever. ” and said. “Tulsi has done an incredible job. and we will miss her.”.

Trump then named the next move in the intelligence chain of command: Aaron Lukas, the current Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, will step in as acting Director of National Intelligence.

Gabbard’s resignation comes as her tenure had already been under strain. She described herself as an anti-war hawk. yet her time in Trump’s Cabinet coincided with a foreign policy shift toward interventionism in the Americas and the administration’s stated “outright war against Iran.” While she receded from public view during that period. the record around her office was still defined by its conflicts.

Her departure also lands amid a broader churn of Trump Cabinet leadership. Gabbard is the fourth Trump Cabinet official to leave their role in recent months. joining former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. former Attorney General Pam Bondi. and former Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.

Her critics point to how her choices aligned with the president’s most aggressive claims about intelligence and politics. The material associated with her time in the role says she fired intelligence agents who had debunked Trump’s claims that the Maduro regime was controlling the operations of a Venezuelan-connected organized crime group in the United States. It also says she participated in an FBI raid of elections offices in Fulton County. Georgia. and supported Trump’s call to have ex-Obama officials prosecuted over the 2016 Russian election interference investigation.

The immediate personal reason for her exit—Abraham’s rare cancer diagnosis—now meets the political reality of a high-stakes national security appointment, with the administration already prepared for continuity through Aaron Lukas’s acting role.

As June 30. 2026 approaches. the question for the intelligence community is less about whether leadership changes are coming—Trump has already placed the succession decision in motion—and more about what kind of direction the next DNI will take in the middle of a period already marked by public friction. personnel battles. and the widening gap between public reassurances and the aggressive posture described around her tenure.

  1. I feel for her husband, seriously. But also like… Trump said “in ink” and “final act,” that just sounds kinda weird to me, like why does it need to be so dramatic.

  2. Wait so Aaron Lukas is taking over? I thought DNI was always some CIA or NSA dude rotating around. And the article says bone cancer but “Aaron Lukas”?? The names are all over the place I can’t follow it.

  3. This is sad, but I don’t buy the “trust you placed in me” part, feels PR. Also Truth Social said she’s leaving the Administration, but she’s DNI not like she works at the DMV. Guess the admin style is just to make everything sound like a TV show, and now they’re “already set”??
