Tuchel admits he chose an unselfish England group

Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad landed with a jolt on Thursday night, leaked before it was even official. By Friday, it was confirmed — and the choices have already turned into a public test of who the manager thinks the team should be.
The omissions were high-profile. Harry Maguire was left out, along with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Lewis Hall and Luke Shaw. The reaction has been sharp, particularly from Maguire’s family. Maguire’s mum said she was “absolutely disgusted”, while his wife Fern said he is “up against a single opinion”.
Tuchel acknowledged the blowback when he spoke on Friday. He said he was “surprised” by the public outbursts from Maguire’s side, even as he made clear he could understand the disappointment.
“I think from day one we were very clear that we are trying to select and build the best possible team, which is not necessarily to select and collect the 26 most talented players,” Tuchel said.
He argued his priority is not individual reputations, but the kind of group that can function together when it matters. “Teams win championships, it is as simple as that. What we are trying to achieve in the summer can only be achieved as a team.”
That was also the lens through which he framed the selection itself: a travelling squad chosen for commitment, for “spirit”, and for players he described as “unselfish”.
On Maguire specifically, Tuchel said the situation didn’t come exactly the way he expected. “I was a bit surprised, but I respect his personality a lot, I respect his quality a lot. He had a quality season. I can understand the disappointment. I can see the reason behind the disappointment.”
Tuchel said he believed the conversation with Maguire should have allowed feelings to be expressed privately. “Still, I was a bit surprised as we had a private conversation. He had the chance to express his feelings, which he did. This is fair enough because I can see all the reasons why he could be in the squad.”.
The manager then pointed to the reasoning he says ultimately carried the decision. “But the decision is that we stood firmly with our central defenders that carried us through September, October, November.”
He added that some of those players are part of a leadership group that set standards within the squad. “Some of them are part of a leadership group that took ownership and set the standards high… and it was a decision for these 26 players, even if it feels as it’s against these players.”
With the World Cup squad now set for the trip to the United States. Tuchel’s message was clear: the selection was built around team identity and shared responsibility. not a simple ranking of talent. The fight over the direction of England’s group — and over whether “unselfish” outweighs “the 26 most talented” — has only intensified since the leak and the confirmation on Friday.
