For months, President Donald Trump has reportedly been annoyed with J.D. Vance in private—so much so that White House insiders say the tension has been growing, minute by minute, behind the scenes.

The latest snapshot of that friction comes from a report published on Saturday, May 30, by The New York Times. More than a dozen insiders described an increasingly tense dynamic between Trump and Vance. with the president allegedly fixating on what he sees as a series of political and public-relations missteps by his vice president.

In private conversations. Trump has reportedly questioned whether the 41-year-old Republican can successfully carry the MAGA movement into the 2028 presidential race. He has also compared Vance’s political résumé unfavorably to his own. arguing that Vance had never won a difficult race without Trump’s backing.

That private critique reportedly extended beyond politics. Trump is said to have complained about the number of vacations Vance has taken while serving in office. He also questioned a decision to dispatch Vance to Pakistan for talks tied to ending the Iran war.

One moment—small in the grand sweep of policy. but embarrassing in the way politics can punish—has reportedly stuck in Trump’s mind. Vance allegedly accidentally dropped Ohio State’s College Football Playoff National Championship trophy during a public appearance last year. and Trump has reportedly referenced the awkward incident repeatedly when discussing Vance’s political future.

Behind the scenes. the White House has also been watching Vance’s presence online more closely than many people outside the building might expect. The report says staff urged Vance to step back from engaging with critics on social media. with Chief of Staff Susie Wiles reportedly believing the exchanges reflect poorly on the Trump administration.

Trump’s frustration doesn’t stop at managing the vice president—it also ties into the question that’s been hanging over every Republican year since Trump’s presidency began: who comes next.

Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance are viewed as competing MAGA successors. Trump has publicly fueled speculation about who could emerge as the Republican Party’s next standard-bearer after his presidency, with Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio described as leading contenders.

At a May dinner event in the Rose Garden, Trump reportedly asked guests whether they preferred Vance or Rubio as a future commander-in-chief. Attendees responded more enthusiastically to the VP, prompting Trump to remark, “Alright, sounds like a good ticket.”

But in a recent interview with Fortune magazine, Trump appeared less committed to elevating Vance. Asked who would best continue his “dealmaking legacy,” Trump responded, “Whoever gets this is going to be very important, and if you get the wrong person: disaster.”

In the White House, the reaction to the report was swift: the claims were denied.

The White House strongly denied the report. Communications director Steven Cheung said. “Vice President Vance has done a remarkable job of helping implement the president’s America First agenda.” Cheung added. “Any false media narratives from unknown and unnamed sources fabricating stories clearly do not have any knowledge of the truth.”.

Not everyone in the political orbit is backing Vance either. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also questioned Vance’s political standing, telling The New York Times, “He is no longer in a place where he can hang on to his former reputation. There’s nothing that can protect him anymore.”

When the White House denial meets the specific complaints described by insiders—vacations. political instincts. the Pakistan trip tied to ending the Iran war. and even a trophy mishap—it creates a clash that feels bigger than personalities. It’s about trust. loyalty. and whether Vance’s path inside the Trump orbit is widening—or narrowing—right when his national ambitions are supposed to be taking off.
