When the New York Knicks lost to the San Antonio Spurs 115-111 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Monday at Madison Square Garden. the score wasn’t the only thing hanging in the air. In the loud. chaotic atmosphere that comes with a championship run. President Donald Trump’s presence turned into something else entirely—something fans said they could feel in the way the night unfolded.

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Breakfast Club,” radio host Charlamagne tha God weighed in on the backlash Trump received for attending the game in New York. He didn’t put the blame for the Knicks’ defeat on the president, even as others in the sports media landscape have.

“Donald Trump wasn’t responsible for the loss of the game, but he was responsible for the loss of joy that the New York Knicks fans had been feeling,” Charlamagne said.

He described the playoff run and the Finals as something larger than wins and losses—something the city had been carrying together. “One of the greatest things about this whole playoff run. this Finals run. is watching the joy that Knicks fans have. ” he said. “I’ve never seen anything like it in New York City — not for the Yankees, not for the Giants.”.

For Charlamagne, the problem wasn’t basketball. It was what Trump’s visit did to the mood. “There’s nothing like when the Knicks are winning. And Donald Trump came here yesterday and sucked the joy out of the city,” he added.

The comments came after Knicks fans accused Trump of cursing the team with his unprecedented attendance. Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to attend an NBA Finals game. Fans also complained about the heightened security measures put in place for his visit.

The tension reached a peak inside MSG during the national anthem. When Trump was shown on video screens, fans booed loudly.

Charlamagne’s co-host, DJ Envy, also questioned whether Trump needed to be there at all—despite Trump having gone to Knicks games before. “I’m sure [Trump] is a huge Knicks fan and he’s probably just as excited [as the rest of the fans], but he didn’t need to be there,” Envy said.

Charlamagne pushed back on the idea that Trump’s past attendance should be treated as comparable. He disputed that point directly, arguing that the president’s status and the disruption that comes with it change everything. “The reason that’s stupid is because he wasn’t president of the United States of America back then. ” he explained. “I wouldn’t want any president of the United States of America coming to an NBA Finals game in New York City. The block is only this big. You know how much congestion that it caused yesterday?”.

The conversation anchored on the practical reality of the visit as much as the symbolism. Charlamagne framed the night not as a mystery about curses. but as a public-event collision—where the city’s celebration met the machinery of presidential logistics. and. in his view. the joy got crushed under the weight of it.
