Trump’s Coast Guard rant turns graduates into stage targets

Trump checks – At the U.S. Coast Guard Academy commencement in Connecticut, Donald Trump repeatedly singled out male graduates for their looks—urging them onto the podium—while delivering a point about fitness and adding a pointed line about “good-looking men.”

Donald Trump couldn’t resist turning the spotlight toward the male graduates at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy—at least, that’s how it felt when the 79-year-old president stopped speaking long enough to demand he “check” one of them out.

Trump delivered the commencement address at the academy in New London, Connecticut on Wednesday (May 20). It was his second time speaking during graduation after he did so in 2017.

During his remarks, Trump made a remark about a graduate that sounded less like ceremony and more like a personal challenge. “I want to check him out,” he said.

Then he pulled the moment closer to the stage. While speaking, he invited at least two of the male graduates to join him on the podium and made sure to compliment them on their physical appearances.

“Get up here. I want to see this guy,” Trump said, urging one of the graduates to join him. After shaking his hand, he added, “I hate good-looking men.”

He didn’t stop there. Trump pointed to another cadet and tied it to a fitness story. saying. “We also have the only cadet who earned a perfect score on every single fitness test — now we’re talking fitness. This guy must be something.” He continued, “I think we’ll have to invite him up. I want to check it out.”.

When the man walked to the stage, Trump let the reaction play out loudly: “I want to check it out. Woah.” He then joked about fighting. “We’re not going to fight with him. I’m not fighting him. This is not UFC. Please understand that, Thomas. Look at this guy. Look at the muscles on this guy.”

The physical commentary turned into a brief exchange about impact, too. “I just hit him on the shoulder, I hurt my hand. It’s like hitting a rock,” Trump said.

After the moment with the men, the attention expanded beyond the podium. The New York Times noted that Trump also invited a woman onstage. “If I didn’t invite her up,” he said, “they’d accuse me of discrimination.”

The scene was jarring for anyone hoping for a straightforward graduation address. It also landed in the middle of Trump’s long-running habit of commenting on people’s appearances—often in ways critics have called insulting. The source material describes that he has referred to female reporters as “ugly” and “piggy. ” a line the White House defended as proof of Trump’s “honesty.”.

The same pattern appeared earlier this year. In April. Trump alluded to Vice President JD Vance’s weight. telling the audience at the time that he was “looking for a heavyset gentleman” in the crowd for an Easter luncheon at the White House. “He’s lost weight,” Trump told the audience. “He got a little thinner. And I’m looking for a heavyset gentleman and now I find a perfect-looking specimen.”.

Trump has also complimented Fox News host Dana Perino on her appearance during an interview in March. despite earlier saying such remarks could signal the end of his political career. “And you haven’t changed. You have not changed. I’m not allowed to say this… It’s the end of my political career. But you may be even better looking,” Trump said. He continued. “So I don’t know what you’re doing… But I will not say that because it will end my political career. You’re not allowed to say a woman is beautiful anymore. You know that Jesse [Watters]?. You have to be careful.”.

And this wasn’t the only time Trump’s impulses around competition and appearances have gone viral. Earlier this year, he went viral after asking whether he could beat a mega-famous musician—who was also a martial arts champion—in a fight.

On Wednesday, though, the setting was different: the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, where commencement speeches typically focus on service, duty, and future careers. Trump’s address. instead. turned the graduates into the center of a physical commentary—starting with a simple line that quickly became the theme of the moment: “I want to check him out.”.
